Gee. One would think that deliberate use of textspeak would clue you in to the intentional mispelling of the word, but I have just one question for you:
Is there some REASON a perceived typo brings out your inner t**t? Therapy might help with that. Last edited by gweminence; 10-13-2011 at 02:24 AM. |

The replacement K3 I got a few months ago was just a hair murkier than the K3 it was replacing (that was ordered the first day of release). I don't know if that was due to Amazon cutting costs by ordering a cheaper grade of screen or not. It was close enough that I'm willing to accept that it was just a matter of "batch A" being a little bit different from "batch B."
Too bad the e-ink technology hasn't advanced enough in the last year or I'd have ordered a new unit to enjoy the same wow-factor that I got when upgrading from the K2. |

I received my K4 today. The screen background is darker than my K3 bought two weeks ago.

another k4
I just bought my second K4 NT as a gift for a friend.
With my naked eyes when I put them side by side, at first i thought the new one had darker screen, then I swapped their position and looked again, I wasn't sure anymore... So I did another quick measurement for my second K4, it turns out the screen on the new kindle is EXTREMELY close to the one I bought a month ago. The measurable brightness difference between the white is 0.02%, and 1.63% for black. To put the differences into perspective, attached are the 2 rendering using the closest matching RGB values. The difference is so small that I doubt anyone could reliably tell them apart in real use. Which led me to believe that people who claim to have noticed huge varieties in terms of the screen quality on the K4s either had very bad luck, or simply being tricked by the different lighting(few inches a part and just a tiny angle shift makes a big difference!). Of course I've only measured 2 out of the millions produced, but if they are so inconsistent, I must've had incredible luck to pick out 2 of them that are so closely matched, and both of them have greater contrast than the K3 I've tested. ![]() I am one of the unlucky ones. I had one come from KY and GA Amazon's warehouses. Neither are good as my K3. |

I have the new Kindle for a few weeks now, and just received a Kindle Keyboard. I didn't compare them exhaustively, the screens to me seems a bit different, one not necessarily better than the other. The screen on the Kindle Keyboard looks like it would have a white slightly opaque layer, which would make the dark slightly less darker, and the reflection of light a bit more effective, but it's a rather subtle difference.

So based on my experience, if I were to speculate anything, generally the K4 should have better screen, not worse. K3 is one of the first pearl screen products. They should've smoothed out most of the production quality issues if there were any, and could've made minor improvements without any announcement, which is not something unheard of in electronics. |

I've read all these K4 screen threads and after using my new K4 for a few days now there is no doubt in my mind that this screen contrast is not near as good as my current K3 and DXG readers.
The text on my K3 and DXG almost jump off the screen (like the Sony one someone posted earlier) and I can read either in very low light conditions. The K4 background is much grayer and I need pretty strong lighting in order to read it ok. Talked to CS and I'm returning/exchanging it. Hope my next one is better. If not, I'll ask for a refund. In my opinion, either the new K4 screens are a lower quality screen, or there is a problem with the current 4.0x firmware. In any case I think Amazon is going to have to address this problem soon. You'd think that they could at least pre-view these K4 units before they ship them out, lol! cheers, Tom |
