Yes, they send you random sample books. In two months or so of having my nook I got sent samples once. maybe they got enough complaints they stopped it, maybe it's just that infrequent, no idea...

This turns out to be an interesting thread with various views comparing BN Nook vs Amazon Kindle. I think we need to start with basic facts that are very telling what B&N and Amazon are doing right/wrong.

1) B&N spent the last few years building their digital division and tries to re-brand and transform it's core business to digital. Numbers don't lie, while ebooks are gaining in sales year-over-year, but you still can't replace physical book sales yet. They know it and should know they are investing or "throwing" a lot of money away right now.

2) Amazon has a proven web business model that works. They certainly have proven Kindle can be a functional and affordable product [epub or not]. The big difference here [i think] is Amazon isn't trying to reinvent itself. Amazon is actually expanding it's core business with Kindle.

Frankly, from the start, I thought B&N was chasing the wrong stuff. As someone else mentioned before, B&N's business are books but if you walk through any store these days, you find more merchandises that aren't books and in many cases no relations to books. I feel the Nooks are going down the same path. They are following where the money is going but their business model may not evolves fast enough to compete with Amazon and other players knocking on their doors.

I think Apple's iPad [if they continues to innovate] will ultimately divide ereaders and tablets into two camps, a fan-boi must-have gadget vs a poor-man's entertainment, with ereaders being the latter. Either way, B&N will get caught in a race to keep up in hardwares and eventually realized and learned they don't have the technical visions nor the deep pockets to stay in the running.

I tried to do a comparison of Amazon's and B&N's total ebook offerings. And I couldn't.

Amazon lists 1,030,575 titles
B&N lists...... 2,520,035

But the breakdown doesn't add up. For example, Amazon lists 322,098 fiction and 711,492 nonfiction. That nonfiction number includes 222,657 history. It's hard to believe there were that many history titles published. Yet history only breaks down to about 60,000 titles where did the other 162,000 go? And some free public domain titles did appear in that 1 million total number.

B&N lists 183,704 fiction and only 67,070 nonfiction. There are many more nonfiction titles if you add each individual subcategory. Obviously, when we break it all down into genres we won't hit 2 million titles. There are more available to search than that are categorized. This applies to Amazon also.

And neither let you separate out the public domain. So I couldn't determine how both companies determined their total numbers. But neither company is forth coming in listing their free and public domain titles.

Doug Pardee had an interesting post on B&N's numbers here. He shows this year's numbers vs. last years.

Thanks. Doug did a lot of work to get those numbers. To my estimate there should be 700,000 B&N titles but they are difficult to separate out into genres.

The breakdowns for individual genres might include the public domain books while the total number Amazon releases is the number of non-public domain books. This is just a guess.

It's very possible. All I can tell is that both total figures contain public domain books. Maybe Amazon has a second "list" of ebooks that are included in searches but can't be singled out.

Amazon has about 850,000 non-free books as compared to B&N's 700,000 but both contain non-free public domain titles.

These numbers are amazing considering what that they still don't have a large portion of winners of major prizes such the Pulitizers and National Book Award. A check shows there still is no Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck for the Kindle. They mostly seem to cater to people who read stuff recently published, which I realize to be an enormous market.
