Well, you don't need an actual computer right? Just a device with a non hampered web browser that can open a new window?
So, it appears that the Fire will have a non-neutered full on web browser. I'm thinking that you should be able to check out and download a lib book straight on the Fire via wi-fi and the web browser... Im not bothered much anyway as I do most book browsing and purchasing via computer now. |

It's definitely a coup by Amazon to pull this off -- particularly in this way such that they are still the gatekeeper while offering checkouts from 'your' local library. I'm glad to see the expansion of ebooks in general, but I really am sick of the format wars, DRM, and walled gardens! |

To me $79 kindle and library offerings together is bigger than most people realize.

Sorry, if this is in the thread somewhere...
I was wondering if anyone knows what this means in terms of operating expenses for libraries? Do libraries now purchase both EPUB and KINDLE versions of books (along with dead tree)? If so, they must pay Overdrive (or whoever) a fee as well. Since e-books are non-transferable, does the library keep them forever? Or does Overdrive (whoever) own the books? And lend the same paid copy to multiple libraries? I imagine libraries have enough budget issues. Now they need to support books in 3 formats... |

Well, clearly they have "limited" copies, because many I see as checked out and you have to get on the hold/waiting list. The thing I'm unsure about is whether the libraries choose specifically which books or if they somehow buy a 'license' from over drive for a certain amount/set of content. I do know there are significant difference in content/catalog for the two libraries I have access to, but both got Kindle books at the same time. |

No, they purchase a certain number of licenses for a particular eBook, and can then lend out that number simultaneously in any combination of ePub or Kindle versions.

At my library (using Overdrive), I could see there was "1" copy of an eBook available to lend, and then see a choice of three formats (Kindle, ePub, and PDF). That suggests to me that the library licenses are not linked to format, but rather to copies available regardless of format.
