Sony Reader Owners: What Are Your Initial Impressions Of The PRS-T1?

You can use any Micro-USB chargers. It's a standardized system ;-)

I've been using HTC, Samsung, No-Name, B&N etc. chargers without any problems.

As for the topic:
I like the new specs of the prs-t1, but I really hate the shiny casing. Hopefully there will be skins for the prs-t1 too (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=148357).

And that's not entirely true... Yes, you can use a microUSB charger, but not just any... My mother couldn't use her HTC charger...

But: I have had among others a very comparable system (2 AA, USB-port & cable) which functioned well with an Ipod. But not with the PRS350...

That's what I try to tell - you cannot be sure a distinct charger is compatible. Even a distinct USB port on your PC could fail. It never was a problem with the non USB connector of say the PRS300.


I forgot: I tried even a crank-charger. When you turn the crank too fast - no charging. When you turn the crank too slow - no charging. When you turn it just right - there could be a chance. But I didn't manage it.
And no, the reader is OK (I have 2 PRS350), no failure.

I deliberately used the word "content" rather than "books." If all you read are books, there's really no difference between the K3 and the Sonys, even the T1. I love the Send to Kindle feature! However, if the T1 truly allows downloads via the browser as suspected, then there will be other methods to obtain content wirelessly besides bookstore purchases. For example, you could log-in to your instapaper account via the browser and select the download EPUB option. Or, you could upload/share content using a dropbox account. You could go to feedbooks.com and download a public domain book.

My disappointment is there’s no UK PRS-950 version. That what Sony should have produced.
A 7 inch screen in the new case with Wi-Fi would have been lighter and a kindle beater and would have made an excellent pdf reader.
I have a 350 now and will stick with that. And look for a 650 second hand for about £100.
If I could guarantee getting a EBay US PRS-950 I would buy it even with no Wi-Fi but I cannot risk ordering it and it not arriving.
Why does Sony always leave it to late to get its marketing right? Did this with Mini Disc.

If I could have the Amazon ecosystem accessible using the T1, I'd be happier with the T1 than I am with the 650, and probably would prefer either to the K3.

If I had to suffer through the Sony ecosytem using my K3, I wouldn't.

But lacking a decent wireless ecosystem, I can't see moving from the 650 to the T1. Making the Sony EBR wireless is a step in the right direction, but IMHO not enough.

You are right, though, that Dropbox might be workable. I hadn't thought of that. Makes me wonder if it is workable for the Kindle...I have a DX that suffers greatly from the lack of wifi. You might have pointed out a solution for me!

And I wonder if calibre will interface wirelessly with the T1?

I think that there's a small & soon to be dwindling market for any e-ink 7 inch EBR, particularly with 6 inch EBRs having wifi.

But the 950 does have wifi & 3G - don't they work in the UK?

The 950 Wi-fi works in the UK. However, 3G is for the US only, and it is only for accessing the Sony bookstore (and periodical deliveries). The browser only works over Wi-fi. One of my major complaints about the 950 is that you can't download from the browser. That is why I am curious about the T1 capability.

Not the 950. But the information that Sony has released so far hints that you should be able to download unencrypted compatible files with the T1. I think that is great news, and I am surprised more people aren't excited. Maybe it's because I interact with my Kindle that way and can't do it on my 950 that makes me more sensitive to the issue. Wireless connectivity doesn't seem to be a big deal to most Sony users on MR. That's ok. It is important to me and that's why I have the 950 (and 900 previously). However, I think it was really critical for Sony to add it to sell more product so I'm excited by the T1.

PRS-950 only gets Sony Books via Wifi in USA& Canada. Wifi very restritive, Same as very make model of ereader.
I had a Samsung E60 first and it would only get books through WHSmiths.
It change my view that Wifi is not required.
Had to replace it with Sony 350 best eink touch screen.
Calibre best ebook software.
But for large format PDF books you do need a bigger e ink screen 7inch is good.
Tablet not even useful. Try reading outside in sunlight its no good.
So Sony bring one out 7inch e ink version.
