Perhaps for YOUR REQUIREMENTS, but you are wrong never-the-less it is not a "fail" it very likely will be one of the most popular ebook readers released, just as the classic kindle is.

Read the first paragraph
Man, IMO when you hear the word 'Kindle' you relate it to a dedicated eReader with an eInk display. Without that the kindle loses it.. charm! |

Way too many pages to read everything now.
I have a Kindle 3, a ViewSonic ViewPad 7 and an ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. The VP is FroYo and the Eee Pad is Honeycomb. I have the Kindle application on both. When reading in daylight the Kindle 3 is still unbeaten. Why Amazon wants to dump e-ink is beyond me. The VP and EP are distinctively heavier to hold. The EP only gets used in bed when I have support for my arms. The EP is a 10" tablet with a keyboard/dock that holds 16 GB, a micro SD (up to 32 GB) on the tablet and a SD card in the dock. Two USB ports in the dock and mini HDMI on the tablet. All this for essentially $100 more than the new Kindle. That seems like a no-brainer. |

All in all, I am more interested in the functionality than name. What worries me is that quite often when a new product is developed, the emphasis is on new functionalities - and some of the good old ones are lost. For me the most important ones that I wouldn't like to vanish with new "Kindles" are: - "instant on" - long battery life - stability and predictability - screen that doesn't cause eyestrain One of the good design decisions (IMO) was to use a slider switch. This prevents from unintentional switching the device on. With a touch screen this would be even more important. I have bad experience with palmtops and mobiles switching on too easily when in my backpack or pocket. For example, the Samsung Android phone I sometimes use can be switched on (and unlocked) with a long press of a side button. You could expect that having to use a "long press" prevents from accidental switching on, yet I have found several times the phone operating inside my backpack. The Kindle I carry in the same backpack has never turned itself on accidentally. One thing I am really missing from Kindle is book covers (to be seen while browsing the collection). I hope with new Kindle (tablets?) this would become standard (like in current versions of Kindle for Android or PC). |

My first admission was the the thread was too long to read through, I assumed that color implied LCD. Are they seriously proposing that you watch movies on color e-ink? Is that even possible?

I see Amazon actively making and promoting two Kindles - eInk and color LCD. They serve two different purposes. B&N does it and Sony is about to.

I suspect the Amazon tablet will be a huge success.
As for eink vs backlit, I normally read novels on my K3, but if I want to continue reading in bed at night, I grab my iPad2 - all praise sync to keep my place regardless of which device I use. Magazines and newsapers are always read on my iPad, the smaller K3 screen makes them awkward to read. Basically which device you use depends on what you are reading and where. If I could only afford one "reader", it would be the K3. Last edited by BobLenx; 09-12-2011 at 08:02 PM. |
