I wish NaNoWriMo was around when I was a teenager. I was convinced that I'd be a journalist, writing novels and/or screen plays on the side. My biggest idea was a mystery/soap opera for teens. I had a notebook with the characters all fleshed out, and bits of conversation, possible plots, etc.

Then I grew up.

That sounds like a mistake!

Why not give it a go this year?

I'm not sure how that works. I don't think you have to make your work publicly readable at all, although I think that if you want to be an official winner you must submit it for a word count.

Yep you can update the word count daily during the month and at the months end I believe there is a feature that opens up for total verification of your word count. One thing I have noticed though is that the count of words during the month can vary depending on what word processor program you use. So it's best to go well over the 50k mark if possible since what you think your count is and what it might read as during the final week (for verification) might not match up. That is you might think you have 50,018 words for example and the verification might find that you only have 49,870 or something.

Crap, You all pulled me in. I have recently found some of my earlier writings (they seem to be all over the place from several moves) and have found myself sort of wondering about starting again.

I really thought I had gotten over this writing bug, but the characters are starting back up talking to me. I guess I either need to write, or admit I hear voices. LOL

I read the drek from one story, and man was it bad. I do, however, like my storyline. I think I might outline that story again (or for the first time?) and start from there. I remember where I wanted to go with it, but wasn't getting there. Since it was 10 years ago or so I don't think I'll have a problem with my rewriting what I originally wrote. Now that I think about it I know of some story changes.

Darn you all.

Maybe its because I'm so cruel to them, but my characters don't talk to me like that. Scenes play out in my head like a film clip, but I don't have the characters just stand up and say things like I've heard other authors tell me they do.

Right now I'm replaying the scene where the main character finds a piece of broken mirror, looks at himself, and whines, "Oh, no, that blasted witch gave me blue Sarah Palin hair!"

I'm so happy to see so many folks considering it. I've participated in NaNoWriMo since 2002, and it's always a ton of fun, regardless of how much work I actually get done. It's all about giving yourself permission to just write whatever, which I sometimes have trouble doing.

That reminds me, though, I gotta stock up on coffee and junk food...fortifications and all...

I agree, stormdream. Although I've been a writer all my life, I'd become so embroiled in family &tc - everything else is always so much more important - but in 2009 when i gave myself the birthday present of participating in NaNoWriMo.

(Fortunately the husband & kid are capable of feeding themselves at this point

The coolest thing about it is that you can use NaNoWriMo exactly the way that you want to, you can follow their agenda, or you can do your own thing. If you haven't got last years' ms edited, maybe you want to spend this year's NaNo doing that. Or maybe, like my husband, you just want to take a crack at writing a novel.

For me, the most important things about NaNo is that it gives me an excuse to say "no" to other things (including having to celebrate my birthday) and focus on the writing part. And it gives me a deadline. Don't get cold feet, jedipencil, just have fun with it.

Of course, every year I tell myself I will actually have an outline by November.... characters worked out and all... but this year I am the worst prepared ever because there are too many other calls on my time... I haven't even settled on genre!! But I'm going to do it anyway.

Hey Stormdream, I've also done it since 2002. Did you also hear about it from Holly Lisle'w website? Despite participating for so long, I've never actually gotten to 50,000 words. I suppose I either get tired of the characters oror got much too busy with finals and final projects.

I'm totally participating again this year, maybe I'll actually make it to 50,000 this year Unfortnately, I'm driving a friend to the airport at 5 am and then have to work all day, so no Nanowrimo until tomorrow evening.

Still t-minus 3 hours and 40 mintes....
