Ones that I have been impressed with are...

Omnius and Erasmus from the Dune prequels.

Jill from Greg Bear's Slant.

I'll have to add the others when I get home to look through my book collection.

Nope, haven't seen one before. I downloaded a demo version of a related game (I think it was "Impossible Creatures") for my son once. Looked pretty cool, but I never found time to explore all the possibilities.

Many of Jack McDevitt's novels, most notably his Academy (Priscilla Hutchins) series, feature AIs running their starships, partially or fully piloting the ships, engaging in discussions with the crew, playing games with them, and even showing a desire for self-preservation. They are among the most realistic of AIs I've read.

Both these were awesome. P1 is a little dated but a fantastic read. Gerrold did an updated version of the story, When Harlie Was One with a 2.0 at the end but I found the earlier version was stronger.

Squeee! I now have the contract in hand. (Or, well... in my electronic in-box, rather.)

The article is titled "Simulating Sentience" and is tentatively scheduled for the September issue of ClarkesWorld Magazine.

The only snag is that my literature example for AI based on Quantum Computing was Eric James Stone's Unforgettable, an indie book that's been pulled from publication while the author negotiates with publishers. So now I need a new, linkable example of quantum-based artificial intelligence...

Hmm, seem to've missed some of my favourites:

``Papa'' Hemingway from Mike Brotherton's _Star Dragon_

Musashi from Victor Milan's _The Cybernetic Samurai_

Star Trek: The Next Generation Novel #64 _Immortal Coil_ which is a very cool weaving together of pretty much every android and AI reference in Star Trek

Yatima, from Greg Egan's Diaspora. As a matter of fact, anything by Egan is awesome

Prime Intellect, from The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect, is also quite interesting (although not very realistic).

Quote from recent Slashdot article
Quote:
"Researchers at IBM have created microchips inspired by the basic functioning of the human brain. They believe the chips could perform task that humans excel at but computers normally don't. So far they have been taught to recognize handwriting, play Pong, and guide a car around a track. The same researchers previously modeled this kind of neurologically inspired computing using supercomputer simulations, and claimed to have simulated the complexity of a cat's cortex--a claim that sparked a firestorm of controversy at the time. The new hardware is designed to run this same software much more efficiently."

Argh -- you are evil. I do NOT have time to write a story about an autonomous robot who looks like a centaur on wheels. I really don't.

(But it would be SO fun...)
