Hmm, I never could get the drm remover to work from kindle for pc. I would always get errors. i just tried to redownload some old books I bought from my archive on to my kindle and then transfered them to calibre the way I normally do to backup my purchases and it still works, can't do it from k4pc though. I also downloaded a new free book from amazon and it still worked to transfer it to calibre. I wish amazon wouldn't change things up like this! I was finally getting comfortable with buying from amazon knowing that I could back up my books and then they pull this. Hopefully there will be someone dedicated and smart enough out there to crack the new stuff.

Just to be on the safe side, I just downloaded a free book and liberated it --- no problem. I do suggest that we don't openly discuss which version works and which doesn't. We can do that via PM. |

That is a common sense approach, yes.

There seems to be a lot of FUD going around here. The current system is not dead yet. The very latest tools still work fine with K4PC up to and including 1.6 (though 1.6 support is very new). There are no guarantees beyond that, however. Everything still works as of right now: K4PC, K4Mac, Stand-alone Kindle books, K4iPhone/Pod/Touch.
In fact, I just tested the tools on K4PC 1.4.1, 1.5 and 1.6. Everything still worked as of 10 minutes ago. They are making it harder and harder, though. The next version of K4* may just prove too difficult for the current maintainers to overcome, but it hasn't happened yet. |

Thanks Carol,
I thought about delving deeper into why I couldn't get the k4pc way to work, but the other way I do it has worked well for me as I copy my documents folder over when I connect my kindle to calibre. Who knows how long that will last til the next kindle update. It just sucks that they are making this more difficult for people trying to legitimately buy their books. I mean there are people with Sony Readers, Kobo Readers, Nooks ect that are buying kindle books to read on their devices, that is more sales for amazon is it not? It just will make people get their books from alternative places. I want a book that is future proof to whatever device I may use in the future. I don't believe I am renting a book when I have to pay 14.99 for it. (I never pay over 10 but even that is high for a "rental") DRM just prevents honest people from using their purchase to it's fullest extent, it won't stop the pirates. The whole industry needs to realize that and get rid if it altogether. Would make for happier honest customers. |

Amazon doesn't use DRM to stop pirates, they use DRM to tie people into their system (they want you to use either their software or hardware to read the books bought from them).

They don't do that either. Bezos has said that Amazon is DRM agnostic. DRM is required by the publishers.

A couple more reports of difficulties with K4PC 1.6 reported both in US and Europe. Seems to have started Sunday or early Monday this week. It only seems to be a very select group of books but no one is providing which titles are affected.
Lots of speculation. |

If amazon is doing this to get publishers on board for the new textbook rental thing, then they should apply this new DRM to the textbooks only and leave other books alone. I could see how cracking the drm on textbooks would appeal to poor college students that are robbed blind with textbook fees.
Still don't see how textbooks will be usable on the kindle or even the DX. When I was in school and taking lots of math and science courses, using a tablet would have been not practical. I flip around alot in reference books and textbooks and not read straight through. Plus they are going to have that whole monthly rental thing. Doesn't sound like it will work to me, but I am not in school anymore so who knows? |

Sorry I'm a n00b, this only effects kindle for pc correct? If I have 'free' books in calibre or loading on my kindle they're not going to suddenly become unusable are they? I get them already drm free and I wouldn't even know how to un-drm a book lol.
