No, one ereader is not going to cause a problem. Or one laptop. But when you have 100 - 500 people on board, with a various collection of devices, there is only way to ensure that nothing bad will happen. And that is if they are all off, they can't cause issues. So easy answer, turn them off. |

And keep away from those damn butterflies in China. Those little buggers keep flapping their wings and bad things happen.
Little colorful jerks is what they are. Grumble, grumble. ![]() Last edited by anamardoll; 07-15-2011 at 04:07 PM. |

I'd like to know what OFF is also. My Sony is always in the sleep mode when we take off and land. Considering the fact that some airlines now offer wi-fi, you would think they find it safe, even if everyone on the plane is connected.

Just got back from a week in Florida. I packed a magazine to read during the take-off and landing. Seriously, it's just not that big of an inconvenience.
Once again, the problem is not wi-fi or any other "wireless" capability. The problem is the processor that runs at a couple megahertz and generates a small but measurable amount of electromagnetic interference. |

Don't all those laptops connected to the wi-fi the airlines provide require processors?

Actually the issue is not primarily based on radiation or stuff like that (althogh tere were severe probs with cellphones 10 years ago), but on
1. Heavy devices not secured during takeoff and landing (Laptops, Netbooks etc.) 2. Divided attention if using a phone / MP3 player or stuff like that Beginning and end of flight are commonly agreed the most critical during a flight, and in case of an emergency it is really necessary to understand commands issued by the flight attendants or pilots. As for phones during cruise flight: they won't work anyway. Where do Ebooks range on this scale? : Actually nowhere, but Airlines have a strong momentum in changing regulations, and you can't expect the staff to make differences in electronic devices (is it a reader or tablet, with WiFi / 3G, switched on / off), so they make it simple and forbid everything. Not ok, but it's the law. Like DRM ![]() |

Also, anything with a microprocessor radiates an radio frequency signal.
One device, not a big deal, 500 devices, maybe a really big deal. If you want to pay for the testing of all combinations of all devices, on every type of aircraft flown, the airlines will glady take the data. |
