One suggestion, for those of you afraid of a broken/bricked edge, with no future options. Use a good credit card, like American Express. Their purchase protection plan will take care of you. It extends the manufacturers warranty by one year. One week after the warranty on a Dell laptop expired, the Hard drive failed. American Express refunded my entire purchase price after determining the fix would cost close to the purchase price. Everything I purchase that could fail is paid for with my credit card.

Another good option is to purchase a Square Trade Warranty from Amazon. For $39.99 you can get a 3 year warranty that includes accidental damage protection. Most customers on Amazon give the company 4-5 stars. Plus they received good reviews from Forbes and NBC.

Seriously, it seems to me that the PE is precisely what I want (though the Color Nook's resolution is tempting), and now I can afford one. So my order's in at Amazon, thanks to you all: it's great to see a vibrant community like this one.

My personal problem is that I'm buying this a a reward for myself for 30 days of not smoking -- but I have 29 1/2 days to go. I suppose I'll be able to convince myself that I have to open the box and see if it works -- and if I can upgrade to ermine (assuming this site's still up) -- but then, back in the box it goes. Meanwhile, I'll be lurking.
Good luck with the quitting! The PE is a great reward for your first tobacco-free month. As a fellow former smoker (with occasional minor relapse), I suggest playing a lot of sudoku and reading trashy novels on your PE as a smoking avoidance strategy--it works for me!

Yes, one of the hardest things about going smoke-free was finding something to do with my hands once I no longer had all the cig-related activities to keep them from just hanging there at the ends of my arms. A PE would have been a great source of manual occupation.

The annual fee is probably enough to match the expected value of the benefit...as the Master wrote, there ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

I disagree, I use my Costco American Express - no fee card, for everything. I received warranty coverage so far on 1 laptop, 1 vacuum cleaner, 1 camera, 1 wireless headset (dropped into a cup of coffee 2 weeks after purchase) and 2 laptop batteries, plus I received a full refund on a product that did not work, after the company did not acknowledge my support requests.

My experience has been similar, cheyennedonna - A couple of warranty coverage refunds by Amex on large appliance repairs were more than the cost of the annual fee (so far, at least ). HOWEVER, in my zeal to grab the reduced price on the Pocket eDGe, i forgot to use Amex for it, so I have to hope it lasts at least two years, to avoid the remorse .

The Wall Street Journal Tech review today was less than stellar on the Playbook.

So, here's what's holding me back:
(if anyone wants to chime in, feel free)

a) I use the journal A LOT and I'm not convinced I could live with the smaller screen. The screen on the EE is about the right size for me.
b) It feels a little redundant having two of the same machine, different pretty much only by size. Yes, that means I'm more likely to have the PE on me but realistically, I don't really go anywhere. If I'm traveling, the EE is in my carryon anyway. I don't have a daily commute, and when I do run out for errands etc., I'm usually not doing much on the road. My MacBook Air is also a really light, carry around machine, so I have that option as well.
c) If the Asus Eee Note is going to cost about the same thing, but be lighter while having a screen size closer to EE than PE for writing (and supports a couple of those cheezy addictive games that is all I'm likely to need when I'm out), it might be more fun (and more practical, leveraging features) to have a different device.

So that's where I am. I don't deny that the PE, on its own, is superior to the EeeNote. But if I already have an EE, then I think the scales are tipped (based on my criteria) towards the Asus.

And, hey, with tech devices, the price can only go down as you wait (ie struggle with a decision), right?
Very good points! I know you're trying to induce buyer's remorse in me... and, I'll admit it worked to a degree. I anticipate using my EE daily, and my PE much less frequently. However, when I travel or for fun reading, etc, I thought EE's little sister would be nice. In addition, should something (God forbid) happen to my EE, I can pop the SD card into the PE and at least recover some of the data.

I might save up for the Eee Note, too, should that prove to be awesome.

Sounds like they're losing serious money by giving you that card... surprised they haven't kicked you out of the nest / hamster-cannibalized you yet.

Don't the EE and PE use different-sized SD cards?? Or do you have a way of working around that?

Sarah, you know you want one of these sweet little machines. "Resistance is futile!" It fits so nicely on a bedside table, for instance, and can be held in one hand for reading just like a book!

. . . . Let us know when you cave!

EE uses full size SD card and PE uses the microSD. But most microSD cards come with an adapter to use it in a full-size SD slot. There's no problem. I just use only the microSD and then I can plunk that into any machine any time with the free adapters.

It's here (finally!). Just have to run in and pick it up from the office now and begin the two-eDGe family process.

Good to know. Still, I could pop the SD and copy the info to a micro SD on my PC or, as Alefor says, just use the adapter.

Thanks for the warning, though!
