Sold my classic and color as they were too heavy for my arthritic wrists, but did a cancel on the new nook as I realized my sony 350 has more features that I like, apart from the wifi, which I don't need.

No, no landscape for regular ePub books, at least not on this 1st release. I've read on Kobo forums that new Kobo new faces a similar situation. A real shame, in my opinion.

I just ordered the new NOOK Simple Touch (yes, it's shipping now, 6/1 instead of 6/10) as a companion to my Nook Color. I realized this Memorial day weekend that I still want an e-ink display for reading outside. I was sitting outside and I had my NC with the brightness maxed out and it was still really hard to read (I also have the anti-glare screen protector) and I was sitting under a tent, not direct sunlight, but the brightness was still too much to read the NC comfortably so I couldn't get into my book. I still love my NC and I prefer it at nighttime because of the backlit display and to read magazines, but I definitely want something I can read outside or during the day. Another thing I have realized with the NC, especially after adding apps to it, is that I get distracted very easily and I find myself reading less novels than I used to, because I check my email, browse apps, magazines, go on the web to look at clothes, etc, which it's great, but I want to be able to immerse myself in a book like I used to. Lastly, my daughter (she's 4) has apps and books in the NC and sometimes she wants to use the device at the same time that I want to read a book. Due to all these reasons, I decided that the new Nook Simple Touch would be a great addition (not a replacement) to my NC.

Are you sure your NST is shipping today? My preorder from the day of announcement still says it's shipping 6/10. Double-check your order status. I recall getting an email that implied it would ship immediately, but of course when I looked at the order on the bn.com page it had the correct information.

I've decided to wait until the next generation kindle is released to make a decision on whether or not the new nook is for me. The N1e should hold me over until then.

Nothing about the new touch reader seems any kind of improvement over my classic worth paying $140 for. My current nook has 3G and audio playback. I would prefer not to give that up. If anything the new nook has really made me appreciate the nook classic.
The longer battery life seems to be the only real plus, but I can live with weekly recharges. |

Same here, I think the touchscreen is a big improvement over the classic. Word look-up is a breeze, while it was a royal pain in the classic. Also, the library is way better, similar to the NC's.

I went and tried the Nook Touch out today and the whole package (weight, touchscreen, speed, less flashing, dictionary look-up, ability to have single library) make it worthwhile. I haven't even mentioned the additional battery time between charges. All in all a very nice package.

I voted yes because I did it already. The day the USPS site my TSR was out for delivery I reset my Nook 1st Ed. to factory then put it and its cover up for sale. It sold inside of an hour of posting and I subsidized my Nook 2nd Ed. and cut the upgrade price by half. Not bad, considering I used the 1st Ed. for a year on my bus commute.
I'm going to miss Trook for a bit but honestly, I don't think it will be long before certain features from my rooted 1st Ed. return. I never used the audio so I knew I wouldn't miss the headphone jack. The new covers aren't all in yet but I'm now not sure if I'll need one -- the TSR fits in my inside suit jacket pocket almost too perfectly. So far I'm pretty impressed with the device. There's no going back -- the 1st Ed.'s already at the Post Office about to head off to its new owner... all thanks to the efficient storefront at Amazon.com. ![]() Last edited by paultakeda; 06-06-2011 at 02:31 AM. I picked my Nookie on Tuesday - it was a day or two early - and I have read about a thousand pages, still retaining a 60% charge with intermittent WiFi use. I'd hoped for better battery life, but this isn't bad, though I'd not risk a two-week vacation without the charger. It is small and light, and fits in my front pants pocket. It is easy to read, with very black blacks which contrast very nicely against the pearl. With the ability to archive off the device, it seems unlikely that I shall ever need the extra 8GB storage I installed, but that is true for all Nooks.
This is not only a Kindle killer, it may be a PocketBook killer as well, even as good as those devices are reported to be. PocketBook may have to slash their prices in half to compete with this excellent device (hard as that may be for a Euro zone producer), even if they come to market with the Mirasol display - a temptation for early adapters, but not at all necessary for an eReader. I cannot compare Nookie with the new Kobo reader, but at least the Kobo is priced right. I don't miss a headphone jack at all, but I like it on the NC. |
