I once worked for a computer service company (read computer timesharing) and we had a fire at one of our prime data centers the week before the fire control system was to be installed. It was over a week before we were allowed back into the building to even see if there was anything that we could recover. It took another two days to just get into the fireproof vault to get the backup tapes and then another day to get them to another location for loading. Some clients were down for a month.

Nah, I won't provide more info or instructions how to do it. It's no where near user friendly at the moment and I don't know if I will ever make it more user friendly. I just wanted to know if it was breakable so I can keep on buying mobi ebooks and since other people on this forum had the same worrying ideas floating around I just wanted to reassure everyone...

Cheers,

The full-issue downloads at Jim Baen's Universe are from Amazon's S3 service. This works because there is no DRM, so all JBU needs is a link to the static file. These are bigger than typical e-books, because of the illustrations.

After a call to our contact of Mobipocket, he confirms us the reopening of the website for today…

I see that Fictionwise have now updated their announcement to say:

Quote:
... Engineers at Mobipocket.com have informed us that they hope to be back online sometime this week, August 23 or 24....
so it seems to have been put back another day, possibly.

Can you ask him what the problem was? It would be interesting to know.

If it is today, they are running out of working hours.

I too would love to know the REAL reason for the shutdown. This makes me very nervous, considering the amount of Mobipocket ebooks I have purchased over the years. It is also, by far, my format of choice for reading on my UMPC.

I should also mention, that I have been "lurking" here for years, and find these forums very informative, since getting my very first eBook device, way back when, the Gemstar Rocket eBook. This was followed by the first gen Cybook, and now finally my Samsung Q1, the perfect device for ereading!

Welcome NETLOLA!

I am curious about what you're saying about reading on a UMPC. Aren't those tiny LCDs tiring on the eyes? And what about heat and batteries?

Well, they are running out of hours in the day if they are bringing it up today. All I know is that I have not sold one book on their site for over a week now. That really hurts revenue.

The really bad thing is that Mobipocket's problems have halted sales for other book stores as well. Fictionwise seems to have been able to switch some Mobipocket resources to another DRM provider but paperback digital is dead in the water.

I suspect 'the France is on holiday in August' theory is probably closer to the mark than anyone will ever admit.

Well, in France August is regarded kind of like the rest of the world regards the weekend. Right?

You're 100% right. But this week, I started receiving a lot of e-mails again: I guess that holidays are over for most people...
