Then you can use the PI menu to Manage (create and remove) additional UCs, as well as adding and removing column values to UCs. Providing you don't remove all UCs, you won't need to use the Tag Browser again - hence my 'dummy' suggestion.

That said, I'd like to see the Tag Browser Configure options be made available in (or moved to) Preferences->Look and Feel->Tag Browser (tab). I can't be the only person who can't remember what's where

I tried it, for "Favorite Authors." I couldn't find the category I'd created, and clicking in the tab browser to try to find it just gave me a migraine.

Another try, and I don't know. I can open the tag browser, avoid clicking on items, open that menu, select user categories...

3rd time now.

"Category name" is unresponsive. I have to type in the field next to it and guess the right buttons.

"Category filter" works

"Item filter" triggers flashing, so I'll have to avoid it.

My coordination issues make it hard to scroll "Available Items." And the menu won't let me keyboard up or down it.

I tried selecting items and moving them, but that didn't work until I got a category name to stick.

Okay, I have it set up, but is there any way to show the resulting user category? with all the books by the authors in the category?

P.S. @Favorite Authors:true

Got mixed up because when I found instructions, I copied and didn't spot the spelling differences.

Glad we got there - to avoid the tag browser I use saved searches.

Thank you. Now I'm trying to figure out how to create a search and virtual library for everything which is not in any of the other Authors categories... using @Favorite Authors:false doesn't work and using NOT @Favorite Authors:true doesn't either.

IMO @Favorite Books:false should be allowed, I suggest you post a message at Bugs : calibre

Meanwhile, you could mark the books in UC "Favorite Books", and then do a search for marked:false.

How are spaces treated in search? Maybe try @"Favorite Authors":true?

I avoid using any spaces in tags and user categories. For user categories, I use @Favorite.Authors and @Favorite.Books instead.

Okay, I just tried creating a Favorite Authors user category. On a test library of 962 entries, @Favorite Authors:true returned 97/962 and @Favorite Authors:false returned 865/962 entries. Looks like spaces in User Category names works fine on my install of Calibre Portable 4.23 (32-bit).

Note, I'm just using the native implementation and haven't tried installing the plugin version. As far as I know, support for User Categories has been built-in to Calibre since at least 3.15 (last version of Calibre I used before that was 0.9.x, iirc

) and it's not something I bothered looking into until recently.

If the user category has subcategories then @category:true and @category:false find only the items in the first level. The subcategories are ignored. If you want the category and all of its children, use @category:.true and @category:.false. Just as in hierarchical columns, the '.' tells calibre to include the children.

FWIW: all the plugin does is to remove the need to show the Tag Browser in order to access the Manage UCs option. And chaley added support for custom columns after Kiwidude retired, so… it only handles standard columns.
