book designer problem with vista os - Page 7

I am looking at a dell support center window that is on here which is showing system information........ lists service pack 0

so that is all I know.

If you go to the Control Panel, and look for Systems and Maintenance, on the Welcome Screen link mine has a link that tells you what the operating system is.

I just says Windows Vista home Premium........ nothing about any sp1 anywhere.

Congrats April for getting Book Designer to work with Vista. The 07/30/2007 update from here is a complete update. The version from the original website is incomplete. It assumes you've done all the other updates.

Have you loaded anything with graphics and have them display yet?

No, but I guess I can give that a shot, let me see if I can find something with pictures.

No, I won't let me put any pictures in it......... Okay so it's not working 100% but at least it will make my books and to heck with the pictures, at least I am getting something...

Did you also install the Book Cleaner files?

There is a way to get graphics to work....

Code:

regsvr32 /u comct232.ocx
regsvr32 comct232.ocx

Do that from a command prompt. C:\windows\system32 is where that ocx file lives in case you need to go to it.

What to do in simple easy steps...
1. Start
2. Run
3. CMD
4. cd \
5. cd windows
6. cd system32
7. regsvr32 /u comct232.ocx
8. regsvr32 comct232.ocx
9. exit

now try Book Designer and see if graphics work. If not, try a reboot and then try again. Should work after that.

When you do this, remember to run CMD as administrator:

Programs-> Accessories

Right Click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator...

(Being new to Vista... I didn't do it the first time and it would work.)

You said this earlier and again I ask what supposedly doesn't work if you use the files from the new BD site? I've used their install on two computers & it appears to work perfectly. At this point with it working I don't want to mess with it by doing any different updates unless there's really a reason. Are you sure the update there hasn't been fixed?

No I didn't install bookcleaner files, I don't use it................. I am going to just remain happy with what is working for the time being, thanks. For most parts I don't put the books picture on the front page, it isn't that important to me.

Again I may tackle this later, but with the new system and such, don't want to mess around too much...... got another update after doing those tests, LOL, and one this morning, I guess I should see if it's still working.
Yep, that part of it is still working.
Once you set up Book Cleaner to do it's thing, it just sits there and does it. You don't have to run it all the time. It sits int he background fixing things as the file loads.

Also, if you collow the directions I posted above with pitolee's addendum, then you can have graphics working.

When the latest update first came out, it was incomplete. It worked for me and some others because we've gone through the update paths. But we didn't know it was incomplete until others mentioned problems. Someone then pointed out what was wrong and I made an install that was complete for the update.

I cannot be 100% sure that the updated on the BD website is incomplete or not. But why risk it when the same update is here and known to be complete? Plus, here you can also get the Book Cleaner files so you can fix some gotchas on content loading.

Since I've installed their update & it works perfectly I just don't want to mess with what already works if that make sense. Not that anything's likely to get screwed up, but why mess with what's working.

I did install your Book Cleaner files, which I really appreciate. I hated having to fix em dashes manually.

I don't see how you're ever going to get wiki instructions out on this with everyone installing BD on Vista PC's a different way. If anything the installation is more confusing than before April installed hers.

I'm going to wait until SP1 gets installed next month before I try anything and then give it a go, though what "it" will be, who knows.

Too bad vvv wouldn't chime in and give us his advice, but I suppose he feels like he's already done that on the Book Designer site and he's not obligated to translate his thoughts into English.

Graphics work great. I just did what I said in my earlier post, installed DHTML, etc. & it's all working just like it does on my XP machine at work.
