Here is the data from Gartner on tablet sales predictions:

Media Tablets (Thousands)
2010 - 19,490
2011 - 54,781
2012 - 103,425
2013 - 154,150

I see the data and I think it only makes my argument stronger that B&N would love to sell NC's by the truckload but what is the future of the company is selling their content. NC is platform to sell content and can help drive other tablet owners to their content.

With the numbers expected in the Gartner research, being quick to the market and showing people what B&N has to offer the tablet user, by having one of their own to showcase the content seems like really good business.

I think everyone sees this only as a device not a platform and what I saw Tuesday was a new device to push ereading in all the varieties B&N is now clearly going after.

If they provide decent apps, at this price point they might do rather well.

As the success of the Kindle and the iPod show (since both were competing against decent devices already on the market), marketing is everything.
Gartner's number does not include NC because it is marketed as a reader. The impact is indirect just like iPad's impact on kindle.

Do you think consumers will make that distinction?

I totally agreed. It should be noted that even Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had indicated that Kindle as a dedicated device is only temporary until the final hardware matures. The future lies in the software, the apps. Nook Color, based on the spec, has an outstanding display and solid processor to compete on its own with other Android tablets. But more importantly, it is a tool for B&N to debut their apps, the nook kids, nook cook and nook xxx, which is the much bigger vision of the company to establish themselves in the untapped territory of ebook. This is not a “me too” approach; it is an approach with a vision and they are one step ahead of the competition.

No, but consumers will be exposed far more to tablets than a reader.

I like how aggressive BN is being. Not only with the Nook Color and the staking out of the new areas, but also in some smaller ways, like the catchy rebranding of e-books now as "nookbooks" and making their ebooks compatible with non-Nook devices (e.g., Jetbooks and Pandigitals).

I'm just wondering how much of that research was done on people with over-40 eyes? It's not something that's usually discussed until your peer group passes that mark, but your visual acuity starts to change. As you progess onward, and as women go through the "Change", problems like decreased tear production start to affect your eyes. Staring at LCD screens seems to exacerbate that problem, tiring out the eyes sooner.

So all of you folks who don't have problems with LCD screens now - just wait.

I would have thought B&N would at least update the eink Nook to use Pearl screen. But it looks like Nook Color is their only New Thing for the xmas season.

I won't read novels on an LCD display; it bothers my eyes. Then again, I won't read magazines on an eInk display; there's no color.

A device for each purpose and a purpose for each device.

Anecdotal, but my father in law who is 65 looked at me funny when I told him about eInk, he has been reading on his laptop for months and has no idea what I am talking about with regards to eye strain. He reads 4+ hours a day has had cataract surgery and wears reading glasses.

Here is a good article on eye strain and how it may be just caused by the ergonomics. DISCLAIMER: this does not discount anyones personal experience

Eye strain can happen from anything you look at for too long. It has never been proven to be caused by LCD. The real advantage to eink is the long battery life and outdoor reading.
