It looks like a good list but I'm hoping Horror will make the cut. Short Stories would have been nice, but it doesn't look as if either of the separate categories have much of a chance; something for the short story lovers among us to consider when the 2017 nominations roll around.

Now see, I'm really hoping Horror doesn't make it. That's an automatic "pass" month for me. OTOH, I'd have been quite happy to see Short Stories make it.

I'd rather horror than classics. We get too many old books nominated in other categories that would have fit into classics that we don't need it.

War is horror enough for me, thank you. Or "Our Favo(u)rite Books". Either before horror. (and I like classics. Especially when we allow ourselves to include "modern" classics.

We do allow modern books to be nominated in classics. But the problem is most people who like classics like the oldy moldy type.

Tell me if I'm wrong.

I've gathered from previous discussions here that a great many novels originally considered to be science fiction became known as fantasy when scientists realized that aspects were untrue (i.e., Mars having an oxygen atmosphere).

If that is so, would almost everything considered for the science fiction month necessarily be written recently?

^That's complete nonsense. Science fiction 's most important aspect is the humans and what it means to be human irrespective of the technology or science.

I guess they are a little slow this morning (from another thread not in the P&R forum):

Science Fiction involves speculations based on current or future science (theories and facts) or technology which are usually considered possible within the scientific laws of nature. It then goes further to explore the consequences on the human condition. The science used would be relative to the time and place at which the book was written.

Fantasy tends to use more purely imaginary and less fact as its base: Magic, the supernatural, myths, legends, creatures (vampires, werewolves, fairies, etc.)

The two are, of course, intertwined often, creating Speculative Fiction (which can also include Horror) but they are very separate genres on their own.

Translation from another language

I think "Translation from another language" would be more meaningful than "Originally non-English"

In such a scenario, the political differences between the Patriots and the Loyalists would be fair game for discussion. What would NOT be permitted would be to bring the discussion to bear upon current political situations and infusing it with partisan politics. Likewise in that other thread that was quoted above, it's fine to argue about the degree of influence the Judeo/Christian/Islamic Scriptures have had upon society, but taking sides, either pro or con, concerning the merits or claims of those Scriptures is P&R territory.

I could nominate a book that has current enough politics that it would have to be discussed in P&R. So if it's not OK for one book, it should not book OK for all books (IMHO).

You could nominate it. Whether it would win would be another matter.
