Three days of blue sky and warm temperatures. The garden is looking like spring.
No swamp smoke down here but an arsonist has been giving residents and firefighters a hard time in the blue mountains and the sunset on Vault Hill looked red and dim. ![]() |

Soggy, cool Saturday .... after almost a week of intermittent torrential downpours .... now drizzling in an irritating yet persistent manner ....
slept in (no sunlight to wake me) ... now wandering around the house trailing toast crumbs .... nice day to stay in & read .... oh look .... NYT Book Review just downloaded on my Kindle .... see ya! |

We've had little but rain for about a week now. I certainly hope that Dismal Swamp fire has the good sense to be out now.

A bit of rain over last night, and now moderate temperatures today.
Sorry about the continued fire, WT Sharpe. ![]() |

It's Fall in the Wisconsin north woods and the trees are looking wonderful, even those in my yard. Unfortunately far too soon the leaves such a lovely sight on the trees will turn into a tedious chore to rake up on the ground. But for now I am happy, even with all the pollen in the air.

I used to spend an entire day raking leaves every fall, using a leaf blower in reverse to then turn them into dust, and then bagging it all up and leaving them for the trash guys to pick. What an awful lot of work and a terrible thing to toss in the landfill. So I've switched to just mowing the leaves with my mulching mower, leaving the remnants on the lawn, and lightly watering to keep the dust down. I do that a few times each fall. It doesn't look as pretty but I get natural fertilizer for less effort and nothing added to the landfill. I don't know how practical that is for others but I'm never going back.
On the other hand, there are some old guys around (he knows who he is) who don't yet have snow to shovel so they (he) should go out now and start raking. |

For some reason, all the leaves in the neighborhood avoid our yard though, with the happy result that we NEVER have to rake. Our neighbors on the other side aren't so lucky though. Every weekend from the time the leaves start to fall til it snows, they'll be out raking and bagging.... |

I think a lawn done in "Leaf" is a lovely Autumn sight, especially if it's my lawn. But these days I don't have a lawn, and it's just so damn difficult to grow a good wood lot (especially Oak and Maple, maybe a little Beech too) on the veranda...

I don't know why so many folks can't work with the leaves as the natural covering that mama nature intended to keep the grass covered and put to bed for the winter. natural weed barrier and growing retardant

Only because I live in a neighborhood with a homeowner's association that wants everything green and trimmed neatly. And because at two of my neighbors don't like my leaves on their lawns.
