Speaking of elevator shafts, TRUE STORY.

This happened prior to 1979 when I began working at my present place of employment, but I've never heard anyone contradict the story.

One day an employee went missing and didn't report back to the shop to clock out. Trying to be a good guy, the supervisor tried to cover for him by changing the time sheet to reflect that he left on personal leave.

He didn't show up the next day.

Nor was he seen or heard from for the next two weeks, after which time his body was discovered in the bottom of one ofthe elevator shafts.

To get an idea of the fall he took, this occurred on the third floor, but this was an industrial building with very high ceilings and three intermediate mezzanine floors. It was probably equivalent to at least a six story drop in a regular office building.

The supervisor was severely reprimanded, and no doubt never covered for anyone again; at least without being fully aware of the circumstances.

That nearly happened to me once. When I was in the Navy, one of my men didn't show up for work one Monday. I very nearly played the nice guy and reported him present, but didn't , thank God!

A couple of days later the police reported that he had been found in the woods after commiting suicide.

Even today, I can't fathom how much trouble I would have been in!

I had an opposite type of experience happen. I had gone to another building on an errand, passing the staff parking lot on the way - where I saw employee X getting out of his car and walking into the main building at around 10:30. I even waved hello! Later that morning employee X called me and asked to have his time clock record changed since "he got here at 8:00 this morning and forgot to clock in."

I'd be glad to send you one of the ones I've got sitting around, but the shipping would probably cost more than buying a new one...if it's even legal...all the restrictions on international computer stuff...
