Last night, I tried to follow these steps for my G090KB Paperwhite 3 running 5.8.1. I turned on Airplane mode, reset to factory defaults, registered the device and copied over the update file (factory_PW3_5.7.4_initial) - the checksum matched on my download.

Well, unfortunately I did not catch that I did not have Airplane mode back on after the reset, and as soon as I ejected the Kindle (but before I had a chance to go to settings to turn it on) I got a "Update error: 4" in the bottom left corner. Then I got the boot screen (boy with tree, no progress bar though) which I reset a few times, then after some research, plugged it into the wall and left it over night .

This morning it was back on the home screen and running 5.8.2.

Does this sound like expected behavior for leaving airplane mode off? In the serial number wiki, it listed PW3W as my model, but I used the factory_PW3 image as there was no PW3W. Was this correct?

That was expected.
It only means you get to downgrade again, (and again, and again - until you remember to turn airplane mode on).
Or you remember to turn your Wifi access point off.

That was (and is) the correct file.

Makes sense. Tried again last night and all went well. Back on 5.8.2, now with Collection Manager!

It isn't easy to tell from the forum here, but there is still a lot of new users of these directions (hundreds per week) and very few trouble reports.

I am almost afraid to change the directions because of the chance I will make them worse when I want to make them better.

That's fair. I work primarily in Linux so I felt comfortable following the steps without thinking each one through.

If you were to change it, just re-confirming that Airplane mode is on in step 4 would have saved me from myself, but not necessary.

That is one point.
Another is the need for a local registration file.

I know it is not needed for as recent as 5.8.1.1 (on the KT3) but I really need to run down what version(s) / model combinations where it is needed.

For now, I am just answering all of the "Help, I can't get past step xyz" posts.

Good news! By completing this downgrade method on my PW2, I somehow removed the Special Offers from it simultaneously! I wonder why this happened…?

Bad news! By completing the downgrade method on my PW2, I somehow removed the Special Offers from it as well. How this happened is beyond me, but what can I do now to support poor Amazon? How can I pony up my hard-earned $20 now? Assistance in this would be appreciated.

That's better.

What you need to do now all depends, on:
After the downgrade, did you then follow the directions to use the older PW2 jailbreak?
After that, have you installed a customer_*.bin update package from Amazon?

Great Post and has been really helpful up until the last part which has been pretty tricky for me. assuming I wanted to un Jail break my kindle, would that be posible?

To be fair your instructions are spot on. Thank you ! It just the last step of installing the The Kuval part. which i found confusing. but i think i managed that finally and can see kindle launcher and Kual.
I can Im at that stage where its like now what ?..
I mainly installed a JB on my Touch to be able to read epubs so thats my next step
But if i wanted to go back to Stock would i just do a factory reset or is it more complicated then that?

You have to do two steps, in this order:
1) Factory Reset (in the settings menu)
2) Install an Amazon update file
Although there is never any reason to remove the jail break from the device, the "jail break" is only a single file (our public signature key) put into the Kindle's key storage directory.

Install KOreader to read ePUB (and other formats).
