I forgot about my trusty iPad. As long as my modem and router stay on, I can connect via the wi-fi. I don't want to turn the PC back on, lest the power goes off again and I get another one of those dreaded, "Computer failed to shut down normally" messages.

Wish now I'd bought a 3G model.

Bottled water in the kitchen. Flashlights, radios, and a stack of batteries at the ready. Cell phone charged. Jugs of water ready to "flush" (we have a well -- no power, no water). Trash and recycling buckets in the garage. Gutters cleaned and downspout extensions have been installed.

Unfortunately, the ground around here is saturated -- Even without Irene we've had more rain so far than any total rainfall for August in history. So, we're going to have floods no matter what, but strong winds will bring down trees -- the roots just won't hold them in mud.

This time tomorrow we'll have seen the end of it, at least. Good luck, everyone.

I wish you the best, that you and your loved ones will stay safe, that the floods won't reach your house and that the power will come back quickly. We've had 12 hours without power last winter due to a storm, but a small one, nothing like this, I was alone with the kids and not too brave, I can tell you.

So far, so good. The northernmost bands of rain have reached us, but no real wind yet.

It is, however, very dark outside, with the dim, greenish gray light of an oncoming storm.

All quiet & clear & sunny this morning. VERY still. As if Mother Nature is saying "Hurricane? What hurricane? Not me!"

Will clean up yard and "liberate" the trash barrels, etc. later.

Still no word from NJ folk. Saw on the TV - literally millions without power now from NC on north ....

We're here! I stayed up through Irene and slept late.

Lots of leaves and branches in our front yard. I heard something big crash in the woods out back, but it's way too wet to police the area. Whatever it was, it wasn't too near the house.

My folks live about 20 miles north of us, and they're fine. My sister lives a few houses down the road from them -- their finished basement is under about 6 inches of water and they have lost some furniture and computers. They live on top of a hill and never thought they'd need flood insurance, so this will be out of pocket.

One of my brothers was in California and his flight back was canceled, so he doesn't know about his place yet.

I made out OK. A few branches fell in the backyard. Minor road flooding. Basement has a few large puddles of water. Water is coming in from under the house which the sump pumps are removing (most of it). It doesn't appear I lost power. Otherwise, no damage to the house.

Fifi the cat loves hurricanes. She spent hours at the window watching debris blow around.

I'm glad that this tropical storms has turned out to be ho-hum in NYC. I looked out the window earlier and it was sunny, not rainy, but slightly windier than normal. it barely rained by me (upper east side)...like maybe an inch.
