Rain. Lots of rain. A big feeder band is directly overhead right now. Very gloomy out there.

So far, not even as bad as the hurricanes we used to get back home in Birmingham, 300 mile inland. Thank God!

We have voluntary evacuations currently. Flooding from storm surge is the main concern.

I have a fondness for them also. They are very romantic, and not just as phallic symbols. But while we can worry about them, we have to remember that they were built to last. They have weathered many many hurricanes.

Except didn't they move Hatteras? Will this be its first major storm on different soil?

Yes - they did move the Hatteras lighthouse further inland. I was lucky enough to visit it and climb to the top before it was closed off to the public as "unsafe." I'll never forget that rickety, rusty metal spiral staircase. It's unforgettable to view the ocean from that height - you see the waves break on shore before you hear the sound.

Irene is predicted to intensify to cat. 3 before slamming into the NC coast and barrier islands - which are so flat that storm surge can completely cover them. Inland, central NC is now predicted to have 25-50 mph winds and rain. So we're still preparing for power outages and tying down the trash cans & lawn furniture.

Just keep posting as long as you have an internet connection so that we know you are OK. That goes for all of you NC, NJ, NY, etc in the storm's path.

I'm checking in. Just got done tying down the lawn furniture & trash cans, moving light stuff under the deck, etc. Got plenty of water & batteries & cat food & cat litter & Scotch. Winds starting to pick up. We're currently in the 30-50 mph wind gust range. Charged up the cell phone (dreams has my number - and WTSharp's/Tom's number), readers, tablet, etc. I think we're as ready as we're going to be. Now it's all up to Irene!

Pooh, it sounds like you have battened down the hatches and are ready to wait it out. Have you a generator?

That's why I have never evacuated my house. I will NOT leave my cats - ever! We were together the night Hurricane Fran dropped a tree on the house!
It's one of my pet peeves - why shelters won't allow pets (suitably restrained/boxed) brought in.
It will probably kill me some day - but I will NOT abandon my furry family members.
