I remember when we lived in New England all our neighbors planted geraniums around their vegetable gardens as a natural pesticide. The also planted garlic between rows of other veggies for the same reason. Seemed to be effective as they didn't use any chemical pesticides but had very little insect damage.

I grew a giant orb weaver. :>) Now I have to be careful Mr. or Mrs. Orb weaver doesn't get any neem oil when I'm spraying for the nasty bugs. It's quite pretty. I also have to be careful not to put my arm through its web.
Let's face it. I don't mind spiders. I can even appreciate their beauty. BUT. I'm as squeamish as the next gal. That web stuff touches me or that spider moves across its web at lightning speed and I'm outta there so fast, I beat my own scream to the back door. |

![]() We've been having some really hot humid weather for past couple of days, and at the same time, I caught a beauty of a cold. So we decided to fire up the old aircon for the first cool-down of the season. The machine is a good one and quickly brought the house down to a comfortable 27° (80°F) and nice and dry. Didn't give it a second thought until I woke up this morning to find my fennel plants looking like Robert Frost's "Birches." Fronds bent down laying on the ground.... cooked by the output of the air conditioner. I REALLY was looking forward to two nice meals using fennel bulbs, and they don't sell them in the markets here. I'm bummed. ![]() Stitchawl |

I'm not much of a gardener, but our strawberries are ripening faster than we can eat them... Half of the daily crop goes into the freezer (whole, simply clean them, remove the crown, put them on a plate (freezer safe), be sure they don't touch; when they're frozen, put them in a freezer bag or something else that's freezer safe and can be closed off). About a quarter gets eaten during breakfast and I take some with me to work. The rest I'll mash up and make a nice smoothie out off.
The raspberries are also nicely ripening, the first red ones have been spotted. They promise a bumper crop (I don't have a huge freezer for nothing!). The blackberries are flowering and it looks like we'll have a few more than last year (we cut down the bush all the way to the ground last year, because we needed to put a trellis behind it). The red berries are huge and red as well. Now I need to figure out what to do with them... I'll probably try to freeze some of them as well. Maybe make some juice out of others. The apple tree is full of apples. They also promise a bumper crop by the time fall arrives. I was afraid the pear tree didn't have much fruit, but after looking a bit more careful, I found a decent amount. But that tree needs some maintenance, so, the crop is a bit less (compared to the apple tree, that is). It's been a very good spring for fruits. Enough rain, and some sun, even though I thought it was too cold... Now they need warmth and sun, mostly... |

Florence, growing narcotics is frowned upon.
Even if they are for personal use only. Tsk, tsk. The High Priestess is not supposed to be literally high! |
