The IceBox is merely cold today, but SUmkIII is stuck in Kansas City in an ice storm. Farking Spring.

When you look out the window here, it is a beautiful spring day -- birds singing, daffodils blooming, sun shining. When you step outside, you are hit by an arctic blast of air that cuts right through you and makes you run back into the house for your thermals.

The fog seems to have burned off. I'd like to go out for a while. Rather than staying in here fighting with the computer.

It's raining heavily. Not the sudden storm kind, that wants to pound the flesh from your bones with liquid ball-pean hammers, but the "set in" stuff that makes the air so drenchingly thick with water that it'd be like walking through treacle to go out in it. The house has sprung a leak again (one of the usual suspects). The rain's got a little bit wind behind it too. The BoM is saying:
"A severe weather warning has been issued for damaging surf conditions with waves to 5 metres in the surf zone producing significant beach erosion. Rain periods. Moderate to fresh and gusty easterly winds. Dangerous beach conditions." The rain radar is currently blowing out from blue to yellow over Tewantin. The surfcam's are currently playing silly buggers, probably overloaded with traffic, and there's lots of flooding south just over the border, cutting off roads, and likely to be more, and wind damage, up here as this goes on. With waves over 8' expected this arvo on Noosa Main Beach, we might drive down and watch the fun later on. It looks like we'll still be waiting a bit before we get the rest of our beach back. Cheers, Marc |

From the BoM rain radar, it looks like the ugly, yellow blob that crossed the coast stalled just ever so slightly inland, and now it looks like a stream of wet from the northwest is filling the blob up until its cup runneth over, and it spills back towards us, apparently, from the sound now coming, bringing some thunder with it.
(The link in the above won't mean much if you don't go to it within a reasonable time of posting this, as everything may have moved on or changed) From 9am up to 1pm today, we've had 63mm/2.5" of rain which is a reasonable drop, and enough to cancel flights to Sunshine Coast airport. It's a coolish (with the wind) 24C/75F. It's just gusty now though - no rain. We'll see if the rain comes back... Cheers, Marc |

My sister, mum and nephew, having driven about 4 hours from my brother's (taking the inland roads to avoid flooding), have got within 10 minutes of home in Cooran before being blocked between the highway and home by flooding. They're now trying to get here instead, but have found most roads flooded, with journos and police and firies fishing fools in drowned cars out of the water (I've directed them up some ridge-top roads to Tewantin, from where they can get here okay). I've walked down to the cake shop to tell my brother-out-law to come up here rather than home, since you can't get to Cooran from here either - it's basically isolated. The rain is still coming down heavy, and worse inland.
"Traffic Incidents" (ie. flooded/closed roads) for the area: http://www.131940.qld.gov.au/131940_nch/Incidents.asp The good news is, this close to the coast, and in a place used to heavy, near-tropical rainfall, the floods usually clear pretty quick. The better news is, the brother-out-law brought cheesecake (I might direct my sister down some more flooded roads, so we can eat it before they get here). Okay, thunder coming again, and I better go be sociable... |
