Alexander Street is a company that offers a subscription music (I think that it may all be classical music) service to libraries and, perhaps, to other institutions. I suppose that libaries and maybe other institutions get special discounts and such things, that individual consumers do not, but I don't know exactly how that arrangement works.
Graciously, every two weeks they offer to individuals two or more free music downloads (all from a single album), however, from their popular online music collection, regardless of whether or not the libraries of the individuals subscribe to the collection. The most recent freebies were announced just a few minutes ago. They are from Lakme, by composer Leo Delibes. It is described as an opera, but I heard no singing (a good thing, in my opinion) in either movement that they're giving away (being unsophisticated as I am, I thought that "opera" implied that there was singing in it). There are two movements from this opera which are free. One is Act II Entracte and the other is Act II- Ballet des Bayaderes. Should you wish to know more about these two movements, there is a substantial amount of information about the entire opera, on this openmusiclibrary.org webpage, which should be helpful. Downloading Alexander Street's freebies is easy peasy. Simply navigate to this webpage, click on the blue "download" button and that will take you to a page with links to the two free movements. The files are MP3's. Oh, I suppose that I should give credit to the performers and conductor of these movements . . . . the Orchestre Symphonique de Radio-Tele-Luxembourg plays the movements under the direction of Jean-Claude Casadesus. I missed yesterday's freebie at http://www.emusic.com/dailydownloads/toolbar/main.html
Can anyone tell me the 10/31/2016 song/album/artist selection? |

Piano Concerto No. 1: Romanza, by Frederic Chopin. That's the free piece available today from YourClassical.
This rendition is performed by Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra, along with Idil Biret on the piano. Robert Stankovsky is the conductor. It is 11 minutes, 43 seconds in length. It comes from a Naxos album, Chill with Chopin. Find out more about the entire album on this Naxos webpage. Unfortunately, Naxos' webpage for reviews for the album has a message that says "there are currently no reviews for this album." That's odd, since the physical release of the album was over 13 years ago. Oh, well, I'll try on the album for tomorrow's freebie. And, unfortunately, clicking on the "Direct MP3 link" on the webpage for today's free piece has been giving me a "Page not found" error (FYI--The direct link is http://http://download.publicradio.o...016111_128.mp3). YourClassical has been extremely reliable in the 5 or 6 months that I've been posting their free pieces, so I suggest that you check back there later today to see if they've corrected the problem. If it is still not functioning by the end of the day, I suggest that you check the archives here tomorrow and see if it shows up. The problem could be because of Halloween, and ghosts, goblins, ghouls, etc. having attacked the system. Yes, I know that Halloween's over here, and most everywhere else on the globe, but there may be a slice out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, before the International Date Line, where it is still Monday. ha Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 11-01-2016 at 04:57 PM. |

The M.O. for Classical-music.com:
- One free download per giveaway period. - You have to have an account to download their freebies. - The downloads are only (at least that's all that they've been so far) in MP3. - Once you're logged in, downloading a piece is about as easy as it can get. - A new free download is offered each Tuesday. With it being Tuesday, there is a new freebie from Classical-music.com. It is a piano piece, from pianitst Noriko Ogawa, of Satie's Je Te Veux. The blurb: This week's free download is Satie's Je Te Veux performed by Japanese pianist Noriko Ogawa. The recording, on BIS, recieved a 5-star review in September. 'Ogawa convincingly destroys the (alas widespread) belief that Satie's music actually needs puling about for its sly humour and sudden movements of tenderness to make their mark,' writes Roger Nichols. 'In this utterly delightful disc she manages to convey not only Satie's quirkiness, but his honesty.' Once you're logged in, click on the red "dowload now" button, covering part of the thumbnail image of the album(?) cover, on this webpage. The piece will automatically download to your computer! It is a pleasant piece but, imho, there is nothing that makes it stand out from other, similar piano pieces. I'm not much of a fan of piano music, though. Still, definitely worth downloading and adding to the classical music play list on on your MP3 player. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 11-01-2016 at 05:29 PM. |

First, a disclaimer--this is not my kind of music! But if you're a Grateful Dead fan (shudder!), their official site offers "30 Days of Dead" every November. Each day of the month an mp3 track is free to download, or at the end of the month you can download the entire month's tracks as a zip file.

FYI--the band (or whoever owns the copyrights) has placed a huge number of their performances on the Internet Archive. They may all be live versions (not my favorite) of their songs, I dunno. Like I said, I'm not a fan, so I don't know much about that. |

That's one more song than I like from them. I can't stand them. I'd rather have a root canal than to have to listen to any of their songs.

UPDATE: I just tried the "Direct MP3 download link" at http://www.yourclassical.org/story/2...o-no-1-romanza, again, and was able to download the file this time. It appears that whatever problem that YourClassical or their source had has now been resolved.
I usually can listen to an entire free piece while I'm writing up my posts, but this piece is nearly 12 minutes long and I didn't have much to write in this update, so I haven't listened to all of it. But, it sounds fine so far. It is one for the piano-lover, however. Quote:

Maybe you would like Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia (inspired by Jerry(?) Garcia of The Grateful Dead) ice cream better. When have you last had a root canal? They are much gentler and maybe less painful now than the first one that I got, which was in the late 90's. I was at the dentist's office yesterday and hoping that she could do a root canal and save a tooth. It was not to be. I had to have an extraction, instead. It didn't go very well (they said it was an "8" out of "10" ("10" being the worst) as far as difficulty, patient discomfort is concerned). I won't gore you with the details. ha I would have much preferred the root canal and crown route (well, except for the expense. ha) Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 11-01-2016 at 09:16 PM. |

A family member is a Deadhead and not very computer savvy, so every year I have to download this material and burn to discs. I only listen for the few seconds it takes to check the quality of the discs, then immediately go back to my beloved Sinatra songs. |
