Exactly. you can use the Japanese coupon on non-Japanese only book, as long as you purchase it in rakuten.kobobooks.com.

On rakuten.kobobooks.com (Jap. site) I log in with my japanese rakuten ID.
On kobobooks.com I log in with my kobo account ID and I use India store.

To switch between these two, all I needed was Hola in my chrome, and to be logged out of one, when I'm trying to log into other.

My account is not locked anywhere. Maybe because I use 2 separate IDs (Rakuten and Kobo) to log in 2 separate sites.

That's exactly what I mean; Rakuten ID works fine on rakuten.kobobooks.com, while Kobo ID doesn't work and has issues after VPNs to rakuten.kobobooks.com and purchases books on it.

Japanese coupons can be used elsewhere too, so I think you are wrong on that. (Comeback3cl86 is a japanese coupon and it works in India as well for example)

You're right on that. I remember when I still had my Kobo account, I tried some fixed-price off coupon (kobojp for 500 yen off, specifically) and it works, but became a $0.99 off coupon.

After playing the competition numerous times and getting nothing higher than 20% I decided to try out the Japanese store.
However there is one rather large problem - I dont read Japanese! If there is an option to change it to English, as I had hoped, I couldnt find it.
I did manage to muddle through and create a new account, as I didnt want to use my usual one. But when it came to actually buying a book, I was stumped. I found the book and did get to the payment page but couldnt find where to add the coupon code. I wouldnt be willing to enter any payment details without being able to read what I was doing, and I couldnt find if Paypal was an option.
Could someone who uses the Japanese site please let me know if there is an option to change the site language to English, and if so where is it exactly?

This is not encouraging. So far, the best I've managed is a 30% code. Today's was a low of 10%. All I really need is one good code so I can buy the one book in this month's Baen Bundle that I actually want.

Similar situation here. I've got a $13 book I want to get, but there is no way I will be getting it anytime soon without a discount/coupon. (It's $10 at amazon and google, which is still more than I want to pay for it.)

I'm a little sick right now, but I do think once I start feeling a bit better, I may try my hand at multiple codes again.

There's no option to change it to English as far as I know I'm afraid. Maybe you could use google translate.
When you get to payment page you add coupon codes here:


click on the purple arrow and you'll get this:


Enter the code into the box, and click on purple letters.

I don't know about paypal. I lived in Japan, so I have all my credit card data still there even though expired, because I don't live there anymore, nor do I buy in Japanese store. Well except on special occasions such as this

Between that and the fact that (only) two books that have bought aren't available whatever the format is -and Kobo keeps repeating this issue is with the publisher, yet months later nothing is solved- I'm starting to wonder why I keep on shopping there. I love Kobo devices though
