Finished Instruments of Darkness by Imogen Robertson. It's her debut novel and she has already written her second using the same crime fighting characters. Somewhat disappointed with the plot. You know who did it early on and there are no plot twists. Rated C- (2 stars).

Next going to try Infernal Devices by K.W. Jeter written in 1979. He supposedly coined the term "steampunk."

Just started "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert A. Heinlein.
My first SF book for a long, long time. So far so good.

Not my day. Maybe it's just hard to find a good book after reading Ilona Andrews. Tried Bubba and the Dead Woman by CL Bevill, and it's actually pretty decent, but I'm not in the mood. There's some odd sentence structure (mostly head-hopping) that throws me a bit. It's quirky and interesting...but I'm not in the mood.

Tried Opal Fire by Barbra Annino but there's some typos in there (periods when there should be commas and an odd capitalization here and there--maybe from a scan that wasn't fully corrected?) Started out good, but it's losing me. Could be a mood thing or it could be that the characters just don't interest me.

Bah.

Just finished Physics of the Future by Michio Kaku and it was an excellent read. Very interesting.

I'm currently reading Die A Little, the first of Megan Abbott's 50s crime noir novels with a female POV. The writing's competent but it feels more like a literary novel than a crime story so far, with no real incident to move the plot forward almost a quarter of the way in. I'm a sucker for 40s and 50s so I'll keep going in any case.

Reading my first at the moment, it's ok, but I am using it to read during the commercial breaks while watching Le Tour, so anything too demanding would be a bit much. Probably won't go looking for another. Try one of the Agatha Raisin by M C Beaton, they are cosies but she's definitely not.

I admit, I did have to get up and have a chocolate pecan bar while trying to read it...The Beatons have been on my TBR for a while.

Sadly the weekend is over. It's back to work for me, but I'll give those a shot. I think the final tally was 5 books tried, zero won.
