It might be better to warn people to use the validation file if they use Safari.

One thing I noticed about Safari users -
They make two attempts to download a file.
The first attempt will run less than a minute and then a new one will start.

So it could be a problem with Safari not replacing the first with the second but trying to append the second to the first and getting it wrong.

If any of the people who had trouble know their IP address, you could PM it to me and I can check the logs to see what happened.

hello everyone.
I've just bought a kindle voyage (kv. s/n 9013xxxxx ) from france ,witch one came stock with the firmeware 5.8.1
I try to install the downgrade "update_KV5.5.0_initiale.bin" but it doesn't work. I have an error message that state that it fails.So I'm still in 5.8.1
Could I jailbreak my kindle voyage after all by skipping the first steps of the tutorial or is it not safe?
anyone have experiense with this case? (could I jailbreak my kindle)

Verify the md5 sum of you bin file or download it from 2 other locations and make sure that all files produce the same sha256 check sum.
The exact error message may help ...

It is not possible.

As advised above:
Download the same file again, perhaps from another down load site.
They should be identical, including size.

What OS and down loader are you using?
What is the error message?

An alternative when using Safari is to uncheck the option to automatically open "safe" downloaded files in the Safari General preferences pane. This is my config and I've had no problems downloading the jb files using Safari.

BTW, md5 is available through the OS X terminal but that's probably too technical a method for many to use.

I read one article today that mentioned neither md5 nor md5sum was included in the default Mac OSx install.

Also, that safari was available for other systems, including Windows, and Windows certainly does not include either md5 nor md5sum.

So I had to leave it up to the user rather than give directions, although I do recall the md5 directions.

open terminal
type:
md5 space
Drag filename onto window, drop
press return

Where I read that, it also mentioned (and showed) that md5 has the fields reversed compared to md5sum.
The way to fix that is to pass md5 the -r flag.

But I could not find out if md5 also supported the "check" option.

So I left the entire mess alone.

Windows users -

I don't think it is a "Safari Problem" now.

I do think that some of these file sharing companies do not support resuming a paused down load.

I will try to confirm that today and post what I find.

If you allow Safari (or any archive tool) to open the file, it will strip the leading '/' from the contents path, destroying the file.

Safari has an option to prohibit it from opening (destroying) the jb tar.gz file.

In old school terms, it is a tar bomb.
All modern tools default to making any tar bomb they handle safe by removing the root directory from the path.

With the exception of cpio, which writes what it sees, even if it will destroy the system.

Opening a file does likely not modify it. Stripping the leading slash during extraction is usually what most people expect. So there could be also nice anti-virus programs or browser plugins altering the archive.

We already went through this previously.
If Safari is set to open (rather than save) the archive with the system's default archiver, when you select 'save' it re-archives the "opened" contents, with only 'safe' paths.
It does not save the original file, it recreates it.

And the sub-topic here is Mac OSx - whose default archiver is bsdtar, not gnutar.
bsdtar does not have an "--absolute-names" option.
