I actually meant the latter, but I see the ambiguity! Guess penultimate would have been definitive.

To answer your question, though, there are 11 books in the series. See:

Maybe it's an "Americanism" but I use the term "second to last" all the time. The second book in a series is second after the first and "second to last" is the second counting back from the last.

Oh, and thanks! I have only read one other book in the series, but I really liked it, so I got it!

In the USA, "penultimate" and "second to last" are synonymous. Not at all unambiguous.

I'm with you but not everyone is!

Penultimate is unambiguous. Apparently some folks (maybe UK vs US usage - sort of like that first floor vs. ground floor thing) think "second to last" is ambiguous. In any case, I'm glad to have provided a bit of interesting Saturday discussion for everyone .

I've never heard "first to last" and only very rarely "second to last."

What I have always heard is "next to last."

As a Brit and an ex- (grammar school) teacher I've been watching this thread drift with some fun! HarryT is also a brit, so, although I'm not sure about his confusion with 'second-to-last', let me demonstrate the answer with my favourite "confuser", 'second to none'.

One of my brighter pupils always seemed to react strongly when I used the above phrase and eventually he came to me after a lesson and asked why I was being so insulting about "whateveritwas" I was talking about.
On asking him to explain, he drew me a chart (he was maths btw) with the following:

All > most > lots > some > few > none.

- - - - then he added 'second to none' to the right of the lot!!! He really thought that 'second to none' meant 'worse than none' (try it yourselves with "second-to nothing" and see what I mean......)

English language is not for the unwary, even the indigenous - no wonder visitors have problems explaining themselves: who knows what other 'direct-opposite' confusions there are - ones we would never even have thought of (viz my example above).

Oh well, back to the topic.....

Look to the Lady (apa The Gyrth Chalice Mystery) is the third in the Albert Campion series by Margery Allingham. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 1 1/2 more days. The e-book publisher of these in the US, Ipso, seems to be rotating them through Countdown, but only for a very short time for each one, so grab it fast if you want it. (Note the Ipso titles are only $3.99 not on sale anyway, which is IMO a reasonable price - although the upper edge of my idea of a reasonable price - for classic/famous backlist....)

Also, be cautious - this is one of the titles in the Margery Allingham Box Set 1 that was on sale a while back, so if you bought that, you already have this.

And finally, BTW, the link at the end of the blurb for the "previously unpublished Allingham story" is legit, as discussed upthread, and signing up for the newsletter has not gotten me flooded with emails, I only remember two? or three?

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JWM96G6

Spoiler:
Quote:
Finding himself the victim of a botched kidnapping attempt, Val Gyrth suspects that he might be in a spot of trouble. Unexpected news to him – but not to the mysterious Mr Campion, who reveals that the ancient Chalice entrusted to Val’s family is being targeted by a ruthless ring of thieves.

Fleeing London for the supposed safety of Suffolk, Val and Campion come face to face with events of a perilous and puzzling nature – Campion might be accustomed to outwitting criminal minds, but can he foil supernatural forces?

This is a stand-alone title within Margery Allingham’s Albert Campion series. However, if you wish to read the books in the order that they were written please follow the link below to have a look at the order of publication:

The Siege is a non-series title by Arturo Perez-Reverte, who is also the author of the Captain Alatriste books. I haven't read this one, but I read and really liked The Flanders Panel a while back. Per SYKM, The Siege won the 2014 International Dagger Award, so maybe I'll push it towards the top of my endless TBR list, even though I was a bit unpleasantly taken aback by the comparison to The Da Vinci Code in one of the snippets of review in the blurb. Siege has dropped to $1.99 right now at Kindle US.

Spoiler:
Quote:
WINNER OF THE CRIME WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION’S INTERNATIONAL DAGGER

For fans of Alan Furst and Carlos Ruiz Zafón comes a haunting and layered thriller filled with history, adventure, suspense, and an unforgettable love story—by the internationally bestselling author Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

Cádiz, 1811: The Spanish port city has been surrounded by Napoleon’s army for a year. Their backs to the sea, its residents endure routine bombardments and live in constant fear of a French invasion. And now the bodies of random women have begun to turn up throughout the city—victims of a shadowy killer.

Police Comisario Rogelio Tizón has been assigned the case. Known for his razor-sharp investigation skills—as well as his brutal interrogation methods—Tizón has seen everything. Or so he thought. His inquiry into the murders reveals a surprising pattern: Each victim has been found where a French bomb exploded. Logic tells him to pass it off as coincidence; his instinct tells him otherwise, and he begins to view Cádiz as a living chessboard, with himself and the killer the main players.

In a city pushed to the brink, violence and desperation weave together the lives of a group of unlikely people: the Spanish taxidermist who doubles as a French spy; the young woman who uses her father’s mercantile business to run the enemy blockade; the rough-edged corsair who tries to resist her charms; and the brilliant academic furiously trying to perfect the French army’s artillery and bring Cádiz to its knees once and for all. And as Napoleon presses closer, Tizón must make his next move on the bomb-scarred chessboard before the killer claims another pawn.

Combining fast-paced narrative with scrupulous historical accuracy, this smart, suspenseful tale of human resilience is Arturo Pérez-Reverte at the height of his talents.

Praise for The Siege

“A genre-bending literary thriller . . . Pirates; serial killings; steamy, unrequited love: Pérez-Reverte imbues the sensational with significance. . . . His descriptions of the town and people of Cádiz capture colors, smells and personalities, making the page come to life, and he balances these sensory passages with dense observations about history, metaphysics, science, and human nature.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Bold . . . [Pérez-Reverte’s] best yet . . . an ambitious intellectual thriller peopled with colorful rogues and antiheroes, meticulous in its historical detail, with a plot that rattles along to its unexpected finale. It’s hard to think of a contemporary author who so effortlessly marries popular and literary fiction as enjoyably as this.”—The Observer

“Pérez-Reverte has long been Spain’s most popular, inventive writer of historical fiction. . . . This is a big and bold novel, rich in character and incident.”—The Sunday Times

Acclaim for Arturo Pérez-Reverte

“John le Carré meets Gabriel García Márquez . . . Pérez-Reverte has a huge following . . . and it’s spreading.”—The Wall Street Journal

The Da Vinci Code and The Rule of Four . . . pale in comparison with Pérez-Reverte’s novels.”—Time Out New York

“It’s a rare novelist who can create a literary page-turner. Arturo Pérez-Reverte . . . is one of those rarities.”—The Denver Post

Appreciate your thoughts but they are inconsequential as you and Harry and all other Brits will be leaving this forum shortly.

Why? You ask. Because of Brexit. When you voted out of the European Union you were also opting out of MobileRead. After all, the founder of MobileRead is Swiss so you have to go.

Shoot, I didn't think you'd fall for that. Oh well, at least, given your background, you might keep trying to sort out the English language. A very interesting book on the subject, by the way, is The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson.
