I'm methodically going through the my web browser bookmarks of the weird-name publishers of out of copyright works.
Kitrinos has a good number marked down to zero right now. Almost all of them are non-fiction. Here's the linky to all of their ebooks, sorted by price low to high. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 09-26-2015 at 06:34 PM. |

Beacon Press is offering a free copy of Beacon Press and the Pentagon Papers. The ebook is 59 pages long and is in the pdf format.
The release and publication of the "Pentagon Papers" was an important event in the history of America's involvement in the Vietnam War (Wikipedia article on the "Pentagon Papers"). The government had published its version of the Papers, in 1971, just prior to Beacon Press' publication of the document (or set of documents, as the case may be). However, Beacon Press was the first private organization to publish it/them. As I understand it, this book discusses Beacon Press' role in the publication of the Pentagon Papers. If you are like me and fuzzy on a lot of the history of the Vietnam War, this book will probably give you a lot of information, and insight on it. And, although Lyndon Johnson's Presidential term had already ended by the time of the Pentagon Papers, the book will also educate you on some of the goings-on in that administration. It is important to the understanding of some of the information in the book that Beacon Press publishes under the auspices of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA). That information is on the title page of the book, but it may not appear in the text itself. Here's the direct link to the ebook. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 09-29-2015 at 04:51 AM. |

Heraklion Press
The Life of Hugo Grotius by Charles Butler Hugo Grotius 10 April 1583 - 28 August 1645) was a Dutch jurist. Along with Alberico Gentili and Francisco de Vitoria, he laid the foundations for international law, based on natural law. A teenage intellectual prodigy, for his involvement in the intra-Calvinist disputes of the Dutch Republic, he was imprisoned and then escaped hidden appropriately in a chest of books. Charles Butler (1750-1832) was an English Roman Catholic lawyer and writer. Butler wrote on numerous subjects but his most popular works are biographies on historic figures. That makes 74 Heraklion freebies, mixed fiction & non-fiction http://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search-...sher=Heraklion http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?url=searc...sher=Heraklion http://www.amazon.ca/s/?url=search-a...sher=Heraklion |

A couple of years or so ago, I made a post about the National Academies Press (NAP) making almost all of their (very sizable number of) books available for free as pdf's.
Well . . . I want to mention this again. I know that the Mobileread membership isn't static and that new people are joining all of the time. Some newbies might really appreciate learning this information. Too, NAP keeps adding new book titles all of the time and there are, in fact, more of them now than there were when I made that post. Finally, none of us have perfect memories (and in the case of some of us they seem to be getting worse all of the time. But I digress.), so a little reminder doesn't seem out of place. For your information (or to bring it back to memory, as the case may be), NAP publishes mainly STEM (Science, Technology, E-?, Math)-type stuff. I say "stuff," because they publish more than books--for example, reports. That kind of book has a well-deserved reputation for being expensive--very expensive to this tightwad . . . er . . . frugal person. I know that some of them at NAP are just south of $100 USD, as hardbacks, and there may be more than just a few like that. So, to get these books free as pdf ebooks is a real boon. If the above sounds interesting, I suggest that you head over to the National Academies Press' website. Then click on the prominent button at the upper right corner of the webpage that says "browse by topic." You'll get a drop-down menu of their books, organized by topic. |

I see four titles on Osprey Publishing's website that are marked down at the present time. They are all $1.99 each.
Osprey is a publisher across the Pond (or if you're across the Pond, it's not across the Pond. ha), in Great Britain. They publish high-quality military and military-related titles. I don't think that I own one of their titles, yet, and I know that I haven't yet read one. But one thing that stands out to me is the cover illustrations often on, and in, Osprey Publishing's books--they are consistently excellent. Here are the titles and authors of the markdowns, followed by the retail/regular selling prices: Napoleon Bonaparte, by Gregory Fremont-Barnes. $9.95. The Russian Civil War 1918-22, by David Bullock. $15.95. Panther vs Sherman, by Steven J. Zaloga. $15.95. Roman Centurions 753-31 BC., by Raffaele D"Amato. $13.95. Curtiss P-40 – Snub-nosed Kittyhawks and Warhawks, by Carl Molesworth. $15.95. As you can see, the discounts from the retail/regular price are really steep! I'd like to buy all of those books, but my "must-buy" is the Roman centurions one. The books are available in "multiple formats," which as far as these ebooks are concerned, at least, are ePub and pdf. Here is the link to the webpage with all five of the marked-down ebooks. UPDATE: Osprey will direct you to place these titles into their shopping cart and purchase from them. However, I just found out that all of the above books are available at Amazon (Kindle mobi) for the same price of $1.99 each. If you want the ePub it might be easier just to purchase it from Osprey, even if you can find it for the same price elsewhere; if you want the pdf, it may be impossible to get it anywhere else, much less at the same price, and even if you can it almost certainly will be easier just to purchase it while you're there at Osprey's website.
