Well... there are days my receptionists don't have me at the top of the good guys list...

As for the meds questions: Antidepressants, except for bupropion, are all indicated by the FDA for treatment of anxiety. I always start out the discussion of such prescribing with, "Now, I know that the label will say antidepressant, but..." and then go on to explain the mechanism of action that allows the med to fix anxiety. Usually better than benzodiazepines, which are primarily indicated for anxiety.

Well, we only have my therapist's word on that. I quote "You were agitated, hostile and with a flat affect(?) when I went to have your prescription written up. It was just an antidepressant. You are fixated on Lexapro." I wish I kept the damn sample so I could ask pshrynk, but I wasn't thinking clearly.
Whatever he gave me, which I assumed was another Valium variant, as per usual, kept me up all night. Crying, with a "sound" in my head.
So I'm either more screwed up than I thought or he lied.
And if you want to call me a liar, do it to my face, "friend".

I'm sure pshrynk can tell you a helluva lot more than I can about these things, but I do know this - side-effects are widespread and often difficult to predict.

Regardless, he sounds like the sort of medical professional who will do what HE thinks is best, without consulting you, because how could you know anything that would help? I generally dislike that type with a passion, and will go to them only if absolutely desperate.

Do you keep any sort of diary of the various meds and their side-effects?

No, I don't keep a med diary. I know Lexapro (20 mg.) made me feel better, I could feel happy for the first time in my life. Except for one other med which made me sweaty and twitchy, I was usually given valium variant generics which didn't do anything. The only other med I ever took was Rozerem ( 8 mg.) for insomnia, which made me feel groggy the next day. I was put on that because they said the melatonin I use (which works great) isn't FDA approved.

So, the meds that do work, you're not allowed to use??

I was wondering about the med diary because I thought maybe having a written list of tried medications and their side-effects might - eventually - help someone work out - and prescribe! - what you need.

I was told Lexapro can cause liver damage. That's why they took me off it.

Seems to be a common problem, what will help one condition unfortunately can cause another - cancer drugs especially ....

Mind have you seen the list of possibles that are added to the instructions of paracetemol/aspirin ....

What worries me more about common drugs like aspirin is what they're not telling us. They have recalled some types of Tylenol here in New York with no explanation.

These two would never be approved by the FDA/EMEA today.

As for the drugs, I would cite pshrynk's post, there isn't much to add to it.
But the truth is, *you* are not the statistic average person (very few are). Which means, the drug X is indicated for the treatment of Y, cause (just an example) 95% of people response to it. But no one can guarantee an effect. I hope your next therapist gets you the right meds. I might be a good idea to get your medical history from the old one, so the new can avoid the failed drugs.
Is there no way to order the FDA-not-approved stuff from the internet? I have heard that is being practiced here, when a drug is only available abroad.

I think that's a perfectly acceptable use for a sticky .

But maybe some stickies should have a lifespan - and some of the older ones could now be culled (e.g. the 'favourite gadget' one?).

*sigh* dealing with traveling, different beds, not enough pain meds, 0149 and waiting for something to kick in.

technically nothing can be ordered from the internet without a prescription. if you do manage to find an hoenst to goodness drug, not a placebo and receive it in the mail, you run the very real risk of coming up on some sort of charges of being in posession of a drug without a prescription

I hope they kick in soon. What a PITA!

It might depend on the FDA-rating. In Australia, the more dangerous drugs require prescriptions - but some that aren't approved for sale as 'medicine' may still be sold and bought legally - in these cases the buyer faces no penalty and the seller only has trouble if they advertise it as having medical properties.

Recluse, I hope something's sorted for you soon!
