how odd! I woke up from a dream that was out of my child hood... a wnderful snow storm shutting down all but essential services. everyone at home, soup simmering on the stove, crackling fire keeping the house warm. sledding and skiing! it was wonderful!

there was a "twilight zone" episode I very vaguely remember... a young woman was asleep and dreaming that the earth had gone out of its orbit and was heading for the sun and warming up. she woke up to find that the earth had gone out of its orbit, was cooling down and heading away from the sun.

or vice versa. either way, it was headed for a horrid conclusion.

I'm sure we should already have a standard note you can print out! This happens all the time, every where. Why don't we have a standard note, excusing tardiness from everything other than books??!?

In the 1970's we used to have a lot of foreign students living nearby. Every winter some of them would see snow for the first time, and it was enchanting to see them.
One morning we had a young Iraqi technology student knocking on our door, after a heavy snowfall overnight, asking incredulously, "Is that ... snow?"
We told him yes, it was, and he rushed to tell his friends. Then they rapidly discovered the possibility of snowballs, and burying each other in it.

My partner recalls being on the student bus at the University of East Angilia once, when it started snowing. One overseas student turned to his neighbour and asked, "Is that snow?"
The reply was, "I don't know; I'm from Nigeria."

I love those kind of stories, and I love snow Pity that I haven't seen a proper snowfall since I was a kid. There was nothing better than getting all 'togged' up in three layers of clothing, running down to the local park and building snowmen. Then there were snowball fights and ice sliding and...damn, I'm all nostalgic now. I vow this time next year to be surrounded by snow!!!

in paris a lot of people get excited about snow (i'm at the top of the list) because it's fairly rare here. about 10 or 12 years ago we had a really cold winter and it snowed quite a lot. i remember spending the whole day walking around outside. i bought some roasted chestnuts from a street-vendor who looked like he was seeing snow for the first time and we smiled at each other like little kids. later on i saw a black man walking along with a plastic disposable camera : he was pointing it up in the air and taking photos of the falling snow, and smiling to himself. that whole day it seemed like everybody was happy and excited, everyone seemed ready to giggle whenever you caught their eye.
