Well, well, well, it looks like B&N wants to play with the big boys. It's the same price as Audible, only the benefits are much worse. Why anyone would sign up for B&N, instead of Audible, is beyond me.

That said, I signed up for the free trial just to get another free book. As soon as I get my book, I'm canceling. When I do these one off deals, I generally get a lengthy anthology.

Barnes & Noble is finally offering an audiobook service

The launch is arguably overdue. Amazon bought audiobook heavyweight Audible in 2008, and has both woven it into services and expanded its offerings with original books and services like the all-you-can-read Audible Plus plan. That investment has helped Audible dominate the market for years, and that's not including longstanding competition from Apple, Kobo and others. Barnes & Noble is entering a very well-established market as a relative outsider.

I just don't like the idea of my purchased audiobooks (and ebooks) disappearing (or simply not being available if/when I decide to cancel a plan completely).

Two that definitely do not do that are these:

Audible Premium Plus (Download to computer with purchase through credit or card)
Downpour (Can be downloaded to computer in mp3 or m4b)

One that does NOT do that is Chirp Audiobooks, although I have acquired some of their audiobooks.

These are the only 3 that I am intimately familiar with. Of the 2 mentioned above, I'm sure there are other sites that allow download to computer (for later conversion, if necessary) to add to one's collection or for archival purposes.

I checked again today and now it appears that I'm eligible for this offer. I'm guessing that I needed to wait 'x' number of days since my last trial offer to be eligible. Either that or it's just Amazon being Amazon.

Based upon what you're telling me, I believe I'll simply wait until April 20 (when my plan officially ends), and see if they offer me an inducement (read: better upgrade plan) to join the Premium Plus plan.

I was asking if you had ever signed up for Audible's free trial of Premium Plus.

It's hard to say. Amazon's algorithms work in strange ways, with some folks getting better deals than others. It's always a YMMV thing.

On Monday, April 11, 2022 at 8 PM EST or 5 PM PST our subreddit r/LOTR_on_Prime is hosting a Live Audiodrama of The Hobbit. The company that will be voice acting this is called Audiotorium and they are a Social Audio Production Studio.

This is part of a runup to Amazon Prime's new series - The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on 02 Sep 2022.
