Four titles in the Charlie Peace series by Robert Barnard have dropped to $3.99 at Kindle US. This is about the upper limit that I will consider to be on sale for backlist titles, but Barnard is pretty well known and won a Diamond Dagger, so...

Bad Samaritan, #4
link: https://www.amazon.com/Bad-Samaritan.../dp/B0061Q64WK
Spoiler:
Quote:
When British policemen Charlie Pearce and Mike Oddie investigate the unsurprising murder of the village parish Lothario, they question Rosemary Sheffield, the vicar’s wife. Rosemary, who has recently “lost” her faith and been accused of immoral behavior with a Yugoslavian refugee, makes a perfect suspect. Another winning combination of plot, character, and wit from Barnard.

The Corpse at the Haworth Tandoori, #6
link: https://www.amazon.com/Corpse-at-Haw.../dp/B007Z4RW00
Spoiler:
Quote:
The body of a young man, almost naked, found in the car park behind a Haworth restaurant marks the beginning of the case, and it is his identity that is the first puzzle for DC Charlie Peace and his superior, Detective Superintendent Oddie. But before long the puzzle that most concerns them is the nature of the close-knit artistic community where Declan O’Hearn had acted as odd-job boy. The little knot of people seem united less by their ability as painters than by a common worship of the distinguished artist Ranulph Byatt, who seems to prefer the adulation of his inferiors to the judgement of his equals. Peace soon starts to wonder if there isn’t a sinister reason for this. And as the search for the killer gathers pace, Peace and Oddie uncover a series of dark secrets in the harsh Haworth landscape.

The Killings on Jubilee Terrace, #9
link: https://www.amazon.com/Killings-Jubi.../dp/B0026SCMM8
Spoiler:
Quote:
Vernon Watts may have been beloved by the millions of faithful viewers of the long-running soap opera Jubilee Terrace but his fellow cast members knew him for what he was -- an egotistical former music-hall performer whose untimely death in a pedestrian accident was not something to be universally regretted.

Sadly, though, director Reggie Friedman soon fills the supposed void by asking Hamish Fawley, an equally unpleasant former member of the Jubilee Terrace troupe, to rejoin the soap. Hamish was never much liked. Now he's more obnoxious than ever.

The mood on the set is not exactly serene, a situation made worse when the police receive an anonymous letter suggesting that Vernon Watts's "accident" may in fact have been murder. Did one of his fellow actors push Vernon into the oncoming traffic?

Detective Inspector Charlie Peace faces tough challenges as he probes the make-believe world of skilled thespians to find a possible killer. With a cast of suspects who are trained to emote on cue, Charlie will need all of his policeman's instincts if he's to avert further tragedy.

Writing with his usual acerbic wit and penetrating insight into human foibles, acclaimed master of mystery Robert Barnard gives us another winning entry in his magnificent body of work.

A Charitable Body, #10
link: https://www.amazon.com/Charitable-Bo.../dp/B004T4KROM
Spoiler:
Quote:
What an honor, to become a trustee of one of England’s distinguished stately homes. Yorkshire cop Charlie Peace’s wife Felicity is at first thrilled when she’s asked to help oversee Walbrook Manor, a recent gift to the nation. It’s not long, though, before both she and Charlie smell trouble. Suspenseful, witty and, as always, superbly insightful, A Charitable Body shows Barnard at his scintillating best.

Free today on Amazon UK-The Devil in the Marshalsea by Antonia Hodgson

WINNER OF THE CWA HISTORICAL DAGGER AWARD 2014.

Longlisted for the John Creasey Dagger Award for best debut crime novel of 2014.

London, 1727 - and Tom Hawkins is about to fall from his heaven of card games, brothels and coffee-houses into the hell of a debtors' prison.

The Marshalsea is a savage world of its own, with simple rules: those with family or friends who can lend them a little money may survive in relative comfort. Those with none will starve in squalor and disease. And those who try to escape will suffer a gruesome fate at the hands of the gaol's rutheless governor and his cronies.

The trouble is, Tom Hawkins has never been good at following rules - even simple ones. And the recent grisly murder of a debtor, Captain Roberts, has brought further terror to the gaol. While the Captain's beautiful widow cries for justice, the finger of suspicion points only one way: to the sly, enigmatic figure of Samuel Fleet.

Some call Fleet a devil, a man to avoid at all costs. But Tom Hawkins is sharing his cell. Soon, Tom's choice is clear: get to the truth of the murder - or be the next to die.

Thanks, Mort. Note that it's "Marshalsea" (one word) - the debtors' prison.

Free today on Amazon UK - Private View by Meg Elizabeth Atkins

Spoiler:
Chatfield, 1986

After a private art viewing on a bleak February evening, the local gallery owner – the flamboyantly camp Minim Minikin – is found murdered.

A painting on display has also been stolen.

The case has DCI Sheldon Hunter stumped.

After months of enquiry, the investigation has turned up nothing.

No suspects, no murder weapon, no painting and, indeed, no artist.

The identity of the painter, Fayne, whose work disappeared that fateful night was as much a mystery to the police as to the art world at large.

Reluctantly, with no leads to pursue, the case is marked unsolved and forgotten amongst heap of other unresolved cases.

Four years later and Hunter receives a series of anonymous letters and phone calls alleging that a family in the picturesque town of Rush Deeping is somehow involved in the death.

His interest piqued, he decides to investigate further.

Apart from being pillars of the community and monstrously self-regarding, the Saddlers seem somewhat unremarkable.

But as Hunter digs around, he soon discovers that their son, Ian, is missing and his mystery caller claims it has something to do with the artist Fayne.

Can Hunter get to the truth before another body turns up?

Free today on Amazon UK - A Killing Term by Robyn Sheffield

Spoiler:
The body count is rising…

Detective-Inspector Jones could discover no motive for the suspicious death of the young man who worked in Chalingford’s Planning Office.

Like others, he could speculate about what went on, but despite his best efforts he was no closer to solving the case.

Driven by ambition, Robert Howick – headmaster of Trelawne School – inwardly quakes at the fear that certain dark and damning secrets could, if known, entirely destroy his hopes for the future.

But with the power to hire and fire his staff the way he sees fit, he believed he was unassailable

However, when a body flies off the roof of Civic Hall, Detective-Inspector Jones is drawn into the tangled world of Trelawne School and its complicated inhabitants

Jones suspects that there is more going on at the school than first meets the eye and when a second body turns up, his thoughts are all but confirmed.

Jones is certain that the mysterious events are linked with the crooked dealings at Chalingford’s Planning Office.

He just doesn’t know how to prove it.

When Jones gets called out to the third crime scene, this one on the grounds of Trelawne School itself, and things finally begin to fall into place…

Free today on Amazon UK - Rules of Murder (A Drew Farthering Mystery Book #1) by Julianna Deering - Repeat from 2015

Spoiler:
Introducing Drew Farthering

From The Tip of his black Homburg to the crease in his stylish cheviot trousers, he's the epitome of a stylish 1930s English gentleman. His only problem? The body he just discovered.

Drew Farthering loves a good mystery, although he generally expects to find it in the pages of a novel, not on the grounds of his country estate.

With the help of beautiful and whip-smart Madeline Parker, a guest from America, Drew proposes to use the lessons he's learned reading his mysteries to solve the crime. Before long, he realizes this is no lark, and no one at Farthering Place is who he or she appears to be--not the butler nor blackmailer, the chauffeur nor embezzler. Trying hard to remain one step ahead of the killer--and trying harder to impress Madeline--Drew must decide how far to take this dangerous game.

Free today on Amazon UK - Who Pays the Piper?: An Ernest Lamb Mystery by Patricia Wentworth

Spoiler:
“I wouldn’t like to make you really angry, darling. You know, the only time I did you nearly scared me dead. I believe if you were really roused you might do something rather frightful.”

Lucas Dale, new owner of King’s Bourne, was flirting with danger when he showed his priceless collection of pearls to the guests assembled in his period salon. But when, under threat, he forced lovely Susan Lenox to break her engagement and consent to marry him, he started a train of events that inevitably led to murder, shattering the quiet of the English village. Bill Carrick, Susan’s former fiancé, is the primary suspect, but as Inspector Ernest Lamb and Detective Frank Abbott soon discover, Dale’s questionable past offered motives of revenge and greed to darken the mystery. Motives which would lead another victim into the path of murder…

Who Pays the Piper? was first published in 1940. This new edition features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.

It also means great danger, not only for himself, but a member of his family . . .

Requiem for a Slave is the 11th in the excellent (IMO) Libertus series by Rosemary Rowe. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US.

(With this and the previous few I've posted, it looks as if Severn House is doing a serious sale on some of their historical mystery titles. I like almost all of these series, and hope they continue this...)

link: https://www.amazon.com/Requiem-Slave.../dp/B004ZGLDXI

Spoiler:
Quote:
The eleventh book in the Libertus Mystery of Roman Britain series - Libertus has an important order to fulfil for Quintus Severus, who has commissioned a new mosaic. But when Lucius, the pie-maker, is found dead in Libertus' workshop, and Libertus' faithful slave Minimus is missing, he is once again dragged into a criminal underworld. Can Libertus find Minimus, clear him of the murder, and discover who really killed the pie-seller, and why? The omens aren't looking good . . .

The giant supertanker Prometheus, the largest ship on Earth, sits at anchor in the Persian Gulf. In her tanks are 250,000 tons of crude oil.

Somewhere on board is a crew member determined that she never completes her voyage to Europe. Already, many of the ship’s officers have been killed in a mysterious “accident”.

The fate of Prometheus rests in the hands of Richard Mariner, the tanker’s new captain. It is his responsibility to battle human treachery and the dangers of the open sea to bring Prometheus to safe harbour.

From the Persian Gulf to the storm-tossed Atlantic, Mariner and his crew must struggle against the elements while trying to uncover the elusive - and cunning - enemy in their midst.

Can Mariner solve the mystery on board and rescue the crew?

Or is Prometheus doomed to become a Coffin Ship?
