ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH farking software and puters
Went to install new antivirus software - had been using their trial version and got hold of an OEM version for free with 1 year subscription. Of course I had to uninstall the trial version. Did that. Chucked the disc in to install, installed and BAM lost internet connection on the desktop. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. The connection is still working as the laptop still connected. So I uninstall the software only I WON'T EFFN leave. So now I am stuck with some not so installed software on an unprotected computer and I can't install another one. At least I got the internet back up - was going around the bend. Now I can hassle the farking company to help me. Which won't be happening for xxxx days cos they are in US and I am stuck downunder. Can't even call em to give em verbal earfull. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. Still not feeling better, so I just go out and yell at a tree in the backyard. ![]() |

I use Symantec Corporate (courtesy of an employer site license), and it has never caused a serious problem. I wouldn't touch the consumer Norton version with a stick. Too many stories of "Does not play well with others" and "Won't go away without dynamite" if you try to remove it. If it is Norton, I believe there's an uninstaller utility on their web site for the latter case. You're actually safe enough unprotected for a few days. Don't use IE as your browser, be fussy about where you sirf, be very fussy about what attachments you open in email, and only DL from known good sources that scan on their end, too. The only things my A/V has caught in years have been false positives because I practice safe hex. ______ Dennis |

Norton 360 didn't agree with me either, the backup side of it - there is a norton uninstaller on their web site....
I still use NIS - that's okay .... |

Personally, I still use an older product: Sygate Personal Firewall. Symantec bought them and killed it, but the last freeware version is still available from various repositories. It gets knocked for failing "leak tests", but those tests all assume yhou will be compromised by something that will attempt to disable or bypass your firewall and phone home, and test the ability of the product to resist it. I find it easier to just not get compromised, so I'm not concerned, and SPF has the best interface I've seen in a firewall. I used to run Zone Alarm when my net connection was a DSL line. I got a cable modem, but kept the DSL line as a high speed backup. Having two network interfaces appeared to mightily confuse ZA, and it reached a point where I couldn't mail from either account. SPF Just Worked with no problems, so I switched. ZA got subsequent knocks for becoming bloated and buggy. It appears to be better these days, but I've felt no need to switch. I have layered defenses: there's a hardware firewall enabled in my router, SPF on my desktop, SO's laptop, and my notebook (when booted into Windows), and since it doesn't conflict with anything, I left Windows firewall enabled. (Windows Firewall does fine blocking inbound connections. What it lacks is the ability to control outbound traffic.) ______ Dennis |

Christian lapped up all the gravy in Norton's bowl again. I should strangle that old cat, but it's Norton's fault really for not eating his dinner when it's served.
Maybe one day he'll learn! |
