All the feeds you mention appear to be broken, and I could not find anything on their site.

Here it is: politiken.zip

- Watching America at http://watchingamerica.com/News/
The items in this feed all point to different sites. Some of them even require an extra click to get at the content. I may be possible to make this recipe, but it will be a nightmare to maintain. I pass on this.

NRC Handelsblad, Watching America, etc.

evanmaastrigt,

Thanks for giving the NRC Handelsblad a try. Unfortunately, when I have it downloaded in Calibre, I see only HTML (text and HTML tags).

As for Watching America, the text of the articles (the translations of the originals) do appear at the Watching America site. Each article's headline is a link to the article there at their Web site. The originals can be read by clicking on the link (in blue) just after each article's heading (in black text), which is also a link.

I only want the translations, those articles residing at the WA site.

I hope someone can tackle this one since it is such a good source of news from around the world about American affairs.

Thanks...

XG

That is odd. I installed the same download and it works fine here, on calibre's viewer and on my Sony device. In both ePub and LRF format. What format are you using with which version of calibre? Can you provide a screenshot of what it looks like?

I got that to work, sort of, it does remove the background but of course all the navigation elements and other content not related to the actual story still loads. Is there a way to tell Calibre to look for specific tags or class calls and have it remove/parse the content? I am experienced with HTML/CSS programming but this is my stab at learning Calibre.

I have read through the online documentation but I am thinking some complete examples would help. Should I just download some recipes? Any suggestions on a couple of examples which remove tags?

Thanks,
Chris

Yes there is, and it is nicely documented too. Have a look at http://calibre-ebook.com/user_manual/news.html and then specifically the section "Slicing and Dicing".
[EDIT]Another usefull read is he API documentation http://calibre-ebook.com/user_manual/news_recipe.html[/EDIT]

To determine which elements to keep or to throw out I use Google's Chrome browser, but FireFox with the Firebug extension works just as well (but much slower)

I deleted the version that showed only HTML and text and started fresh with your zipped file. It is now working beautifully. Thanks.

I'm using the latest version of Calibre. I download the latest version as soon as we're notified.

Again, thanks a million!

I don't know what happened on my first try. I may have made a mistake in importing your file. Anyway, all is fine now.

The Guardian Acting Up and Stopping Auto Downloads

There seems to be something wrong with the Guardian recipe. When Calibre runs here and downloads my scheduled news sites, an error occurs and Calibre keeps attempting to download the site.

Does someone have a fix? My apologies if I have overlooked a post regarding this.

Also, is there a way to delay the automatic downloading of my news feeds without having to turn each off individually? Calibre starts the downloads within seconds of my starting the program. Sometimes, I don't want any feeds to be downloaded; I just want to experiment with a recipe or view an item that has been downloaded.

Any help would be appreciated...

The guardian website changed. Updated recipe will be in the next release. There's no way to temporarily disable the download. I'd suggest un scheduling the guardian for the moment.

Calibre = great program. I hope I can get some help for a custom recipe for The Houston Chronicle. I have a basic recipe that will pull feeds but no pictures. I tried to modify the LA Times recipe but have not had any success. Would it be possible to get a robust Houston Chronicle recipe added to Calibre?

The list of Houston Chronicle news feeds are at www.chron.com/news/rss. If I look at the raw feeds in a section, the links follow the format of http://feeds.chron.com/houstonchronicle/<section>.

An example of an individual article link looks like this:

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...n+%26+Texas%29

Thanks for all your support!
