So I figure I'll just buy another one, what generation of paperwhite would most of you recommend I get to use for all this? I don't want to buy one that's too old or too new and not be able to break the drm from it...
Paperwhite 3 (from 2015) seems to be the safest option at the moment. Of course, this could change any day.

For what it may be worth, very few Kindle Unlimited books are not exclusive to Amazon. And since they are loans not purchases (without opening the license vs. purchase can of worms), removing DRM and keeping them is an immoral act much the same as borrowing a library book and keeping a copy. Unlike books you purchase and, at least in theory have the right to keep in perpetuity, making copies of borrowed books simply makes you an ebook pirate.

You might also want to consider that if you do not read the original copy on the original device or app it was downloaded on, the author will not receive any reimbursement.

As for which Kindle to buy? At this time, it seems the rumour that many of the early Kindles will no longer be able to download Amazon purchases in the not too distant future has some truth to it so purchasing a 4th gen or earlier Kindle would likely not be a good idea. 5th generation devices are iffy at this point.

Would a 6th or 7th gen work? I found several of them for sale.

Would a 7th gen work? I've found several of those on sale for pretty cheap.

One can, of course, buy a Kindle Unlimited book.

Yes. A 7th gen PW (aka PW3) seems to be a good choice at the moment.

I'm curious about the method they will use.
There already is a thread where BookFab is being discussed. Please go to the link below to talk about it.

Next big breakthrough for ereaders? Native (not overlay) colour support, plus bring back physical page turn buttons, please. Basically a Gen 1 Oasis with colour, or a colour Voyage. That's the sweet spot, IMHO.

Alexa - can't think of anything. Everyone I know uses alarms, timers, reminders, lights on/off, audiobooks. Virtually NOBODY uses it for buying.
The color overlay makes the contrast very poor. Until we can get proper color without the contrast issues, forget color. It's garbage.

I much prefer the PW5. It's faster and has a 6.8" screen. However, finding either can be difficult.

You have to be very careful. A lot of Kindles sold used are blacklisted. That means that are lost or stolen and cannot be registered.

As a reading device, yes. But the PW5 could get an update with the hardened DRM. The PW3 is less likely to get such an update.

Let me guess, LCP DRM?

I don't really know what DRM they use. Not Adobe, that's for sure.

Not true, at least for me. If you install Adobe Digital Editions, you can select the epub download, and open the .acsm file into Calibre.
