Did they also threaten to release webcam footage of you watching porn to all your Facebook contacts unless you sent them cryptocurrency? I get that sometimes. It'd be impressive to see them try because I have no webcam, no Facebook account, and I don't watch porn (I'm asexual).

It has happened to me... at my work email

(no camera and no Facebook account with that email... porn not, for sure...)

They may have done, I didn't open the email to find out. If they did, they would have been disappointed since like you I have no Facebook account and don't watch porn.

Much the same here though the threat was to send the video to everyone in my email contacts. I do have a webcam on my laptop but the cover is always closed. I've traced the password they quoted back to a hack at a website that I hadn't used in ~5 years. For about a decade now, I've used individual passwords for every site which makes it easy to trace.

Man, if I responded to every email claiming they had video of me in a compromising position with myself by sending the amount of crypto to the wallet they wanted it sent to I'd have sent millions of dollars of crypto.

It's also worth noting that they send multiple people emails with the same wallet address so they have no way to know which sucker paid them.

I was seriously tempted, the last time I got one of those, to write back (obviously, of course I didn't) and say "you know what, you jackass, if you did see me, you deserve those bleeding eyeballs you have now! Can't unsee THAT, CAN YOU, hunh?!"

I get around a dozen spam emails per week, where they claim to have 'seen me on Facebook' and would like to befriend me. Pretty amazing stuff,as I have not got a Facebook account;never have had, and never will!

I once got a 419 where the spoofed from and reply-to address was my own. And my email was definitely not compromised. So I wonder how they actually expected me to respond.

For a change from the usual Canada Revenue Agency scam callers, today I got a call with the usual robotic voice claiming to be from the Canadian Border Services Agency. Evidently an parcel with illegal contents had been sent to me and a warrant was issued for my arrest. Being a curious person, I hit 1 and chatted with a gentleman with a rather heavy East Indian accent who wanted quite a bit of my personal information while informing me that I needed to pay a fine of $2500 Cdn which I could do by purchasing gift cards and giving him the card information. After about 15 minutes, I guess he got tired of me continually misunderstanding what he was asking for mixed with asking for his name and more information about the arrest warrant. He suggested I perform a dubious sexual act on myself and hung up.

My friend Joe got the 'your computer is at risk' call one evening; he said 'I do not have a computer' (He in fact,does!) the caller kept on reading his script about the dangers of an infected PC, and Joe repeatedly said 'I do not have a computer' whenever he could get a word in. This lasted an incredible twenty minutes or so, in which time Joe had repeated his 'I do not'..mantra about a dozen or more times. Finally he caller asked what type of computer he had; he got the mantra in reply,and quietly hung up and ended the call!
