The Great Courses' Newest "Employee Pricing Sale." 50% Off of SALE Prices!
The Great Courses is having one of their better (probably best) type of periodic sales right now. This one is their "Employee Pricing Sale." This sale continues through midnight Monday (I have to assume that that's U.S. EST time).
With this sale you get an additional 50% off the sale prices of the 80 courses that are included in this sale. I've found that these sales have the best prices of any that The Great Courses have through the year. Audible offers some of The Great Courses courses in some of their sales. When they do, I've found their prices unbeatable. However, the courses are never very many in number, and they're frequently ones that I already have or in subjects that don't interest me. My rule of thumb is to try to get a course (of The Great Courses or anyone else) for no more than $1 per hour of lecture time (I'm talking about the audio courses, not the video courses). Here is an example: there is a course in this present sale with 24 lectures of 30 minutes each, making a total of 12 hours of lecture time. The sale price of the course is about $25. When you deduct 50% of that, you get $12.50. That is approximately $1 per hour of lecture time, and so I feel that it's a great deal. I am a big believer in The Great Courses. I'm in the process of going through one of their courses now, and it is of truly outstanding quality. All of the information that you need to get started on taking advantage of this sale is on The Great Courses' homepage. Look in the upper left corner. World Book's [sic] World Book Day Promotion.
Oops. I forgot--none of World Book's books are digital, that I know of. This post is being moved to an appropriate thread.
UPDATE: The only place that I could find for the post is Miscellaneous > Lounge, unless one of the mods issues a special Dispensation of Grace to place it here or on the "Children's" thread (which might be most appropriate). ![]() Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-24-2018 at 01:33 AM. |

Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue by John McWhorter is available on Amazon, Kobo and Apple for $1.99
Synopsis A survey of the quirks and quandaries of the English language, focusing on our strange and wonderful grammar Why do we say “I am reading a catalog” instead of “I read a catalog”? Why do we say “do” at all? Is the way we speak a reflection of our cultural values? Delving into these provocative topics and more, Our Magnificent Bastard Language distills hundreds of years of fascinating lore into one lively history. Covering such turning points as the little-known Celtic and Welsh influences on English, the impact of the Viking raids and the Norman Conquest, and the Germanic invasions that started it all during the fifth Kobo https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/our...ory-of-english Kindle https://www.amazon.com/Our-Magnifice...bastard+tongue One of my favorite examples of confusing things in the English language is if Laughter is pronounced ‘lafter’ Why isn’t Daughter pronounced dafter Last edited by MickeyC; 04-24-2018 at 11:36 AM. |

There is a town of 7,000 people or so in Mississippi named for this Polish-Lithuanian general. It's Kosciusko. It's the only place of any kind that I know of named after him. I suppose that one or more of the founders of this little town knew about the exploits of this general and, so, gave the settlement that name. Kosciusko is not known for much. It is just off of the Natchez Trace Parkway. There is a Bible college there. That's about it. Oh, and it happens to be the hometown of someone that you may have heard of--Oprah Winfrey. Because it's spelled fiche.
...wait, that's not right. phish. ...no, not that either. carp. ...tuna? Anyway, a fish by any other name is still a fish. Unless it's from Denmark, then it smells. Or Japan, because then it's sushi. Or sashimi. Or something... |

Don't Misunderstand East Asia--Get this Palgrave Ebook for 91% Off!
I just learned that the publisher Palgrave has an ongoing daily deal promotion. Today's deal is Misunderstanding Asia: International Relations Theory and Asian Studies over Half a Century. The editor is Gilbert Rozman.
Today's price for the ebook $9.99, represents a 91% decrease in the list price, as given by Palgrave! Palgrave gives a list price for the ebook of $84.99. Interestingly, the price at Amazon is $89.99. The current price of $9.99 represents a 91% decrease in the list price, as given by Palgrave! Sweet. Palgrave (technically, "Palgrave Macmillan," I think) is a publisher of scholarly-, academic-type works. They are somehow associated with the publisher Springer, who publishes items in a similar vein, I think (the two publishers may publish in different fields of study). Let me give you Palgrave's short description of the book: In this volume, experts on East Asia focus on each of the past five decades to explain the weak predictive power of traditional IR (International Relations, G] theory as applied to the region and uncover the true forces driving change. Let me give you good news, bad news, and then more good news. As I understand it, you get this Palgrave book, at least, in both ePub and PDF. That's good news. However, the bad news is that it is digitally watermarked (that may be the reason that the list price at Palgrave is lower than Amazon's price). The second good news is that it is DRM Free. Although today is April 24, and this is a "daily deal," the deal is actually good through tomorrow, April 25. Learn more and/or purchase from Palgrave here. FYI--the page at Amazon for the book is here. |

The one in Indiana sounds vaguely familar, maybe from me having lived in the Midwest from a child through my young adult years. The one in Bay City (I'm sure that it qualifies as being in the Midwest, too, but I lived closer to the Kosciusko in Indiana) does not ring a bell at all. I always try to hedge my bets (figuratively speaking). This time, I put "that I know of." ![]() Welcome to posting. I just gave you some karma for this post.
