The Peacock's Cry is a Hugh Corbett novella by Paul Doherty. Per eReaderIQ, it has just dropped to $0.99 from a fairly long-term price of $5.99. At only 62 pages, I'm not quite sure who would be paying $5.99 for this, unless the publisher was just hoping folks would get fooled into thinking it was a full book. (To give the publisher credit, though, the "Hugh Corbett Novella" is pretty prominent in the title, so probably not intentional, just irrational .)

In any case, if you are a Hugh Corbett fan, it's now $0.99, for an unknown time.

Spoiler:
Quote:
An exclusive digital novella featuring Sir Hugh Corbett, lead of acclaimed historian Paul Doherty's most popular series. Includes an exclusive extract from the eighteenth Corbett novel DARK SERPENT, the follow up to THE MYSTERIUM. If you love historical mysteries from Robin Hobb, Susanna Gregory or Bernard Knight you will love this.

It is 1311 and England seethes with unrest. Sir Hugh Corbett, former keeper of the Secret Seal, has been absent from royal service for over six years. Content to live a life more relaxed with his wife and children in the country Corbett has enjoyed his time away from the machinations of court and the secrets men will kill to keep.

But a visit from his new King, Edward II, brings about change. His former protégé, Ranulf Atte-Newgate, now Senior Clerk in the Chancery, has been implicated in the death of a young novice, and Edward has made it clear that Corbett must resume his post and solve the case if Ranulf is not to hang for the murder...

Corbett knows that resuming his post will bring him to the fore of Edward's political machinations but with Ranulf's life at stake, does Corbett have any choice but to accept the Seal once more?

The Dogs of Rome is the first in the Commissario Alec Blume series by Conor Fitzgerald. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Dogs-Rome-Com.../dp/B003HD2L0O

Spoiler:
Quote:
On a hot summer morning, Arturo Clemente is sloppily murdered in his Roman apartment by a mysterious slasher. When his wife, an eminent politician, finds his body, she swiftly springs into action--by calling the Ministry of the Interior.

By the time police inspector Alec Blume arrives at the scene, evidence has been collected, command taken, and, in short--his investigation has been compromised. As the details of the case continue to trickle out, Blume soon realizes he is being watched from on high--and that solving this crime may be the least of his worries. Losing sleep and unsure who to trust, Blume feels the case spinning out of control: does anyone involved even want justice? At what price will it come? And who runs this town--the police, the politicians, or organized criminals?

In this riveting novel, we are introduced to Blume, an American expatriate and seasoned police veteran. Intelligent yet sometimes petulant, instinctive yet flawed, Blume is a likeable and trustworthy protagonist for this, the first installment of a gritty and promising series.

The Dreaming Detective is the fourth title in HRF Keating's lesser known Harriet Martens series, from which the first, second, third and fifth have fairly recently been either free or Countdown deals. This one is now a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about six more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Dreaming-Dete.../dp/B010BM00EM

Spoiler:
Quote:
‘Who killed the Preacher?’

Harriet Martens is startled. This is her first face-to-face meeting with the new, fanatically determined, Chief Constable of the Greater Birchester Police, and he greets her with the question immediately.

Why is he setting out to antagonize her?

He is talking about the famous Boy Preacher, the charismatic youth who was strangled in the empty ballroom of the city’s Imperial Hotel in 1969.

And he is giving Harriet the mystery to solve because he wants her out.

The case has been unsolvable for over 30 years and now she is tasked with making use of the latest DNA techniques to narrow down the list of suspects; Harriet's inevitable failure to solve it now will take care of her…

But Harriet has more than earned her title of The Hard Detective. She is determined to turn the tables on the chief, so determined that the case takes over her dreams.

With a list of seven different suspects, will Harriet be able to use her already proven skills to work out who had the motive to kill the wildly popular young figure before it is too late, all the while trying to save her reputation and job from the efforts of the media and the new Chief Constable?

The Dreaming Detective’ is a gripping crime thriller from master of the genre H. R. F. Keating.

The Nine Tailors is the 10th (SYKM) or 11th (Amazon) in the Lord Peter Wimsey series by Dorothy L. Sayers. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US today, probably as one of Open Road's daily Early Bird book deals.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Nine-Tailors-.../dp/B008JVJDOQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
While ringing in the New Year, Lord Peter stumbles into an ominous country mystery

Lord Peter Wimsey and his manservant Bunter are halfway across the wild flatlands of East Anglia when they make a wrong turn, straight into a ditch. They scramble over the rough country to the nearest church, where they find hospitality, dinner, and an invitation to go bell-ringing. This ancient art is steeped in mathematical complexities, and tonight the rector and his friends plan to embark on a 9-hour marathon session to welcome the New Year. Lord Peter joins them, taking a step into a society whose cheerful exterior hides a dark, deadly past.

During their stay in this unfamiliar countryside, Lord Peter and Bunter encounter murder, a mutilated corpse, and a decades-old jewel theft for which locals continue to die. In this land where bells toll for the dead, the ancient chimes never seem to stop.

The Nine Tailors is the 11th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College.

If you count only the full-length novels, it's the 9th.

Two of the earlier books in the "series" are short story collections: Lord Peter Views the Body; and Hangman's Holiday (which features only 4 Lord Peter tales).

The Crime at Black Dudley, apa The Black Dudley Murder, is the first in the Albert Campion series by Margery Allingham. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. I am really happy to see several Allingham titles going on sale here in the US as they have over the past couple of months.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Crime-Black-D.../dp/B00J8K56NE

Spoiler:
Quote:
Classic Crime from the Golden Age, the first in the Albert Campion Series. Margery Allingham is J.K. Rowling's favourite Golden Age author.

George Abbershaw is set for a social weekend at Black Dudley manor, hosted by Wyatt Petrie and his elderly uncle Colonel Combe, who enjoys the company of Bright Young Things. With Meggie Oliphant in attendance, George looks forward to the chance of getting closer to the girl he's set his heart on. But when murder spoils the party, the group soon find out that not only is there a killer in their midst, but the house is under the control of notorious criminals. Trapped and at their mercy, George must find a way to thwart their diabolical plans while getting himself and Meggie out alive.

Luckily for Abbershaw, among the guests is Albert Campion ? a garrulous and affable party-crasher with a great knack for solving mysteries and interrogating suspects.

The Crime at Black Dudley, first published in 1929, is the first novel to introduce Margery Allingham's amiable and much loved sleuth, Albert Campion.

Bank Job is a non-series title by Steve Brewer. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 3 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Bank-Job-Stev.../dp/B004VGVTNQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
Jaded, angry and utterly stupid, brothers Leon and Junior Daggett and their homicidal partner, Roy Wade, entertain themselves by knocking over liquor stores and gas stations. When a run-of-the-mill robbery goes sour, they find themselves knocking on the door of a stranger for help. That stranger ends up being Vince Carson, retired bank robber.

Thinking they've discovered their big-time score, Leon and Roy take Vince's wife hostage, forcing him to rob the local bank in exchange for Maria's safe return. But Vince has other ideas. He sets out to prove that old age and treachery always triumph over youth and ineptitude.

Bank Job plays out like a movie-'The Desperate Hours' meets 'Raising Arizona.' It's just the sort of hilarious mix readers expect from Brewer, author of the recent novels 'Boost' and 'Bullets.'

"Brewer's writing is gritty and witty, tough on its characters but easy on the reader."-'The Albuquerque Tribune

"Brewer's pacing is among the best in the genre."-'Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Zigzag, apa The Elgar Variation, is the first in the Inspector Peckover series by Michael Kenyon. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 1 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Zigzag-Inspec.../dp/B0193UND10

Spoiler:
Quote:
Zigzag - a collection of short, sharp turns and angles leading ... who knows where? Not Chief Inspector Henry Peckover, the pride of Scotland Yard, that is for sure.

At least, not yet.

Peckover is despatched to Dublin to escort home a prisoner, who has kidnapped his young daughter and taken her over the Irish Sea.

When that prisoner is shot dead in Dublin Airport car park, Peckover thinks - with some relief - that his sojourn in Ireland is over.

It is not.

For as the mysteries surrounding Arthur Blennerhassett run on beyond his untimely death, and the authorities search desperately for his missing daughter, Peckover is asked to assist with a totally different type of investigation.

Ireland is suddenly being flooded with porn, in volumes so large the authorities seem powerless to stop it.

And Peckover, having spent time with the Vice Squad in London, is the man for the job.

Working with Dublin's Chief Superintendent O'Malley, Peckover follows the twists and turns of what seem to be two crimes: the murder of Arthur Blennerhassett, and the sudden deluge of porn upon Irish shores.

But as he follows them both, Peckover finds the crimes, and the people behind them, zig-zagging into each other with greater and greater intensity…

Helped by a young, idealistic garda, Peckover finds himself attending illegal parties, befriending members of the clergy and reading the lesson in church.

Enduring various beatings, shootings and potentially fatal experiences, he finds himself drawn into words as diverse as that of the (apparently respectable) Gael-America Genealogical Association, and a famous porn actress.

Only in fact, these worlds turn out to be closer than anybody - Peckover included - could have guessed.

Will Henry Peckover be able to stop the criminals before an explosive finale?

Michael F. Kenyon (June 26, 1931 – May 29, 2005) was a British author of more than 20 humorous mystery novels, he was one of the first in the field of spoof-espionage story telling, but perhaps better known for the Superintendent O'Malley, and latterly Inspector Henry Peckover series of books. Peckover was especially successful, fondly known as "The Bard Of The Yard". He was also a regular contributor to Gourmet Magazine, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times.

The Gold Solution is the first in the Alexander Gold series by Herbert Resnicow. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 5 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Gold-Solution.../dp/B01HBI5NOG

Spoiler:
Quote:
‘Fast, funny, deliciously readable’ Kirkus

Is this the perfect crime…?

Meet Norma and Alexandra Gold – New York Sleuths with an old-fashioned solution to murder.

They solve it – it’s as simple as that.

Irascible, brilliant, and somewhat overweight Alexander Gold was recovering from a heart attack.

Yet Norma Gold was sure her good friend Pearl would be the death of him with her incessant request that Alexander solve a murder!

But as Pearl pointed out, Alexander Gold was a genius at solving puzzles and this puzzling case had everybody stumped.

One of America’s top architects, Roger Talbott, had been mysteriously killed in the locked studio atop his New York townhouse.

The only suspect happened to be the nice young man engaged to Pearl’s niece, who was caught red-handed with the murder weapon.

When Norma starts digging, she soon finds multiple motives for murder bubbling just below the surface.

It is very clear that Talbott was not a popular man, particularly among his business partners.

Together, Norma and Alexander are a formidable crime solving duo.

But have they finally come across a case that they cannot solve?

The Importance of Being Honest is the fourth in the Michael Angel series by Roger Silverwood. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 5 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Importance-Be.../dp/B014HHBSIY

Spoiler:
Quote:
When a wealthy businessman is found dead, submerged in the vat of a major gin distillery, Detective Inspector Michael Angel is called in to unravel the mystery.

Several suspects stand to gain financially from his savage murder. And yet none of them is burly enough to have delivered the fatal blow…

Consumed by the case, DI Angel has barely enough time to get a grip on the evidence before his attention is drawn elsewhere.

It is not long before jailbird and bank robber Morris Yardley is also occupying DI Angel’s time, insisting that the Inspector acts as a go-between to secure his freedom. That is, only once he has confessed where the gold from his latest heist is kept.

The clues are as unusual as they come in this chilling murder investigation.

Can DI Angel connect the most unusual of clues – an old lady in a sweet shop, a dog called Schwarzenegger and a whiff of menthol – before it is too late?

Or will the murderer outwit DI Angel and evade justice forever…?

The Importance of Being Honest is the fourth in the DI Michael Angel series.
