I already chose a book this month, but when I looked at the children's book badgoodDeb was talking about, I saw that I was allowed to get it for free. I tried a second book that sounded interesting and it let me get it!

I wonder if they never changed the code that let you get two books like we were allowed to get a month or two ago. It now shows that I have to purchase the next book I checked.

Does the second book free work for anyone else?

I just got a second book for free; thanks. I had picked up the Mark Edwards book the other day, and sure enough, just now I got The Rabbit Girls for free.

Yes, the second free book worked here as well. In case anyone with Prime didn't know, if you share Amazon Prime with family, you get a book on each account.

When we first got Amazon Prime, we didn't do it either. But eventually we did and now I can get a Kindle First Read book and I can access Amazon Prime Video.

The problem with Prime Video is that you cannot have multiple setups like you can with Netflix.

That's why I keep a Kindle app on my Android tablet, few books with graphics (actually none that I've encountered) can't be used with Android tablets. I also enjoy reading straight text on my 10-inch tablet in landscape mode. I set it up with a 2-page display and turn the pages half the time! There are days when my fingers are SO heavy!

A cheap Android tablet is the swiss army knife of media consumption.

I suppose it would work on my iPad too; never tried that.

Nope, I started feeling that way months ago, it's part of why I forget to post them most months when I used to do it regularly.

That's it exactly, they seem to be targeting a specific set of readers that doesn't include me. I can understand why they choose to focus on some genres over others to publish, since some genres are definitely going to make more money than others. But it's becoming quite off-putting that this "benefit" of Prime membership is no longer a benefit for readers who prefer different genres. To give a different example, if the only music available for free streaming for Prime members was country from the 1960s, that wouldn't be a benefit to people who like any other kind of music, whether it's country from other decades, rock & pop or classical.

It's particularly annoying when you take the time to search their scifi imprint (sorted by publication date, go to page one of the search to see future scheduled books) and see they're releasing a book or two in those genres about once a month. In fact they have two releasing in September. And yet they rarely include those genres in First Reads.

Maybe they should revamp First Reads a bit. Perhaps change it to a free book from a limited selection or a decent discount on any book already published by Amazon if you don't want any of the books from that month's selection. Or they could stop pretending the only readers out there are ones that like thrillers, mysteries, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, literary fiction and children's books and mix in other genres like they used to. (That's the ones I remember seeing regularly.)

The First Reads overview page says that you get to pick two this month instead of one. They do that occasionally, sometimes for obvious reasons (like a certain holiday), but this one appears to be totally at random.

Huh. I didn't notice that. I know they do it randomly, but it's usually in big letters at the top.

September First Reads

Not having time at the moment for details, but just a quick look. Again we get two books to choose from (a new trend?). This time out of eight. First six? The usual suspects: Thriller, Contemporary Fiction, Historical Fiction, Psychological Thriller, True Crime, Suspense. The last two: Fantasy, Children's. I immediately picked the fantasy, The Vine Witch without looking at any details. I believe Amazon is throwing us a bone here. Maybe they are watching us. And maybe readers at MR are not so different than others. I am not complaining. What caught my attention as well is the first book, Quantum by Patricia Cornwell. Possibly my second pick, but have to check the other books first.

The true crime and the suspense books look interesting to me so far, but I'm going to wait for some reviews.

I'm probably going to go with Drowning With Others for one choice (I'm influenced by the blurb from Megan Abbott, a great favorite); for the second choice I'm undecided between Little Voices and The Dressmaker's Gift, both of which seem to cover familiar territory, but territory I am drawn to nevertheless.
