Sorry to hear about your foot Zelda, there must be some tight socks walking around here that you can grab hold of for support.

About Linux - The Ubuntu Pocket Guide offers this option :

By downloading a virtual computer application, such as the free-ofcharge
VMware Player (www.vmware.com/products/player), you can
install Ubuntu so it runs within a program window on the
Windows desktop.
A virtual computer is effectively a complete computer recreated in
software. It offers an excellent way to trial Ubuntu, although the
limitations of the virtual computer software mean you won’t experience
Ubuntu to its full advantage (desktop visual effects won’t work, for
example). Additionally, you’ll need a powerful PC with over 1GB of
memory for optimal results.

Poor Zelda.

I believe that there's an acronym to summarise what do do for a sprain: RICE
Rest - try to avoid using the joint
Ice - as DG says, an ice-pack has an anti-inflammatory effect
Compression - get a compression bandage
Elevation - put the foot up.

It's also worth taking some Ibuprofen, both as a pain-killer and as an anti-inflammatory.

Trying to decide whether I want to pack my MacBook or not, and if so should I also bring my Wacom tablet. One is not much use without the other... and I just started working on a new video. If I take it with me to 's-Hertogenbosch, I won't even have to worry about the title, I'll call it Hotel Blues

Although I think the "C" should stand for CHOCOLATE, Patricia is actually correct, it is compression.

Zelda, I hope your ankle recovers quickly. PBOb's suggestion of an ACE bandage was perfect. You need to wrap it securely so that the ankle's range of movement is inhibited but not so tight that you cut off the flow of blood. Growing up in a Coach's and Nurse's household, you learn a thing or two about injury care. Of course, I was the only non-athlete in the house so rarely had to worry about injuries.

thanks guys for the sympathy ! i'm pretty sure nothing is broken ; i didn't actually land on it very hard, mainly because i crumpled like a paper sack when it happened so the shock was somewhat absorbed along the whole leg. also i was wearing boots at the time which perhaps helped a bit to maintain the foot. i think it's somewhat less swollen today (not much, but a little) and it has not turned any unusual colours as my friend predicted it would... i'm going to try to spend at least today walking as little as possible, although it's really frustrating because i had a whole long list of things to do which will have to wait...

thank you guys ! i don't know what i would do without this place. no matter what is going on, i know i can always come here and get good advice about what to do !

i had no ice but i've just now managed to find the ice cube bags i bought the last time i needed ice (over a year ago... in between they apparently were sucked into an alternate dimension because i hadn't seen them since, although i had looked for them once or twice. i had to dig through the kitchen twice to unearth them just now) and as soon as it is frozen i will put it on my foot (ugh... that is really the last thing i want to do in this weather !). also i took some ibuprofen (i guess my instincts weren't totally off, last night i took some already), and i've put *both* my ankle protectors on wrong way around (the long part over the foot), one over the other, since i have no bandage. i hope that is good enough. and i have the foot propped up on a small table. *sigh* what a pain in the bum (in addition to the foot...) this is, and terrible timing. i hate being injured, especially an injury that makes me immobilised ! i have THINGS TO DO !!!

aw ! florence, i feel sad thinking of you stuck in your posh hotel wishing you were at home ! which is definitely not a combination i would have expected ! i hope it won't be too horrible for you. definitely take your macbook and tablette, at least then you'll be able to do something to take your mind off it !

This got lost in all my computer travails. Got a call from one of my recruiters yesterday (Saturday) about an opening here with a major financial firm for an old dinosaur position. Not only that but in a group of 10 or so where I have worked before twice, and all the managers (and co-workers) were pleased with my work. Maybe I'll get some good news for once. (In addition, the quoted price tag per hour was obscenely high. I asked the recruiter to make certain it wasn't the billing rate...)

(The bird have attacked my ripening oranges. I don't know if I'll have any left...)

Good luck good sir! You deserve the best of jobs, you've waited enough. And I'm really sorry for your oranges. Don't you have a beebee gun for the birds?
