Yeah, that tells us what it's *really* for -- to stop us reading on anything other than Kindles. Publishers can't ask to turn *that* off.

Eh, its all legally wrong. I wouldnt draw the moral line there given people are still buying the media in some capacity. I cant imagine this represents more than a fraction of pirates anyway.

I have seen people buy bad ports to justify to themselves downloading a video game and running it (better) on an emulator. I know outside of books some people just dont want to go through the trouble of ripping physical media and just download it. Doesnt seem worth wagging your finger at personally. I think its at minimum less wrong than people ripping rented books to keep forever. :shrugs:

I was talking about disregarding the rights holders wishes (whatever those wishes may be). That's why I quoted a previous post in this thread that said "when the rights’ holders say you can’t". So I could add context and clarity to what I was talking about.

You are not understanding the concept that is being discussed, instead getting hung up on specific words.

Since you are the master of minutia and precision word choice, please edit my previous post to say "rights holders mandates" (or any other word you choose) rather than "wishes", if that would help.

The latter. Amazon is using the unbroken V11 DRM variant for KFX these days regardless of whether or not the book is locked to a user/device or not.

That is unfortunate. So in a sense they are serious to keep Amazon ebooks on Amazon devices.

That's me. I pay for very few of my books, but use my library CONSTANTLY, pick up freebies FREQUENTLY, sometimes from Kobo/Amazon, other times direct from publishers or authors, and have no issue with visiting sites offering public domain books. I'm having a re-read of Swiss Family Robinson currently, courtesy of Gutenberg.org, where I also found out that Jules Verne apparently wrote a fan-fic sequel, which I'll have to investigate!

Owning copyright doesn't give rights unrelated to copying, even if some companies think it does.

I have a question. I was reading a German article about the changes Amazon is making and think some facts got scrambled.
After reading a few pages here i think the changes affect only books bought via Amazon (bought after a specific date). And on this books you can no longer remove the DRM protection to side load the book to a non Amazon Reader. Hope i understand this correct.
But it has nothing to do with Amazon disabling the option to side load for example EPUBs to your Amazon e-reader via USB. This was the impression i got from the other article. I think you can imagine that i was/am really scared this could be the case!
As an PW2 and KOA3 owner (that has a lot of books bought via Amazon but even more from other shops) the option to side load via USB is crucial.

Right now the change is that you cannot download newly published books with the old Kindle desktop apps. If you have an E-ink Kindle, you can still (for most books) use the "download & transfer via usb" option on the website to get copies of your purchased books which you can decrypt.

There are no changes for sideloading to a Kindle. There are some changes for emailing books to your Kindle. I'll let others fill in the details on that as I haven't really looked into it.
