I am thinking he probably needs to plug it in.

Successfully downgraded, jailbroke, and upgraded a new, registered KOA to 5.8.2. The only issue was with KUAL (resolution was documented in the KUAL installation spoiler and had to do with the awz2 version not working on KOA and having to use a "booklet version"...for now).
That involved having to first install MrPI and then a KUAL booklet .bin using the ";log mrpi" search term. Then there is a "book" for KUAL that can be populated with extensions. So the order of installation is a bit different than normal. KOA is, of course new territory. Although, to a layperson it all looks like the same code and such. Can anyone confirm if the backdoor locks, rescue packs (and coward's rescue pack), and ssh all work without bricking? |

How could Step #8 be written more clearly?
OR did you just not open and read the spoiler? |

"KOA and KT3 owners: You must run the installer with your new, search bar command: ;log mrpi. Other models covered in this thread may do the same or may run it from KUAL." What installer? What I did not understand from the spoiler was that the MrPI/KUAL workflow had changed. Instead of: 1) Load MrPI folders and files 2) Copy KUAL azw2 "book" into documents 3) Load .bin files from mrpackages folder It has changed to: 1) Load MrPI folders and files 2) Ignore the azw2 KUAL "book" and get the KUAL "booklet" .bin 3) Copy that .bin to the mrpackages folder and, since you don't have KUAL yet, install it by using the "command line" and "searching for" ;log mrpi 4) Then you have a version of KUAL and can use the gui. @twobob said it much clearer for me in his spoiler for KUAL: Important notice for KOA/KT3 owners: "As of right now, and for reasons outside of our control, Kindlets will fail to run on these devices, so you can disregard the earlier bit about the azw2 file.
Instead, on these devices, we will have to use the Booklet version of KUAL. First, the prerequisites: your device of course still needs to be jailbroken, and needs to be running a recent "hotfix" version (the vast majority of you should be covered, only the early adopters might need to update their hotfix). Then, you will have to install MR Package Installer (MRPI). Never mind that it's technically a KUAL extension and that we're in effect doing things in reverse . Once that's done, put the Update_KUALBooklet_v*_install.bin file (found in the same archive as mentioned earlier) in the mrpackages folder, which you'll find at the root of your Kindle over USB, then eject & unplug you Kindle. Finally, enter ;log mrpi in the Homescreen's searchbar (in a similar fashion as what you had to do during the Jailbreak), and wait for MRPI to do its thing. When the UI finishes restarting, you should end up with a KUAL entry in your Library (showing as a personal document)." Last edited by picree; 08-12-2016 at 12:38 PM. |

"This is not a substitute for reading the README.txt file included in the archive bundle, but ...KOA and KT3 owners: You must use the update_*.bin format package of KUAL and you must use the MrPi installer to install it." To change what I have bolded to: "you must use the command line MrPi installation method to install the .bin version of KUAL. After that all other .bin files can be installed through KUAL via the MrPi extension entry". |

BackDoorLock will not protect you from an OTA update.
Use the blocker directory name given in the spoiler of Step #7. I would really like to write an easier to understand set of directions. All I can say for the current version is that it is a lot better than it was six weeks ago. ![]() Note: At least until we get a chance to take a close look at the situation, avoid 5.8.2 on any of the devices. The new KUAL booklet may not run under 5.8.2 and our maintainer of that is on a (short) holiday. I will be expanding Step #7 to give direct download links for both 5.8.1 and 5.8.2 someday, RSN. Alex has recently given approval for direct links on this forum. Last edited by knc1; 08-13-2016 at 07:31 AM. |

Yep, that's what I was wondering about. Is that Kindle running Android now, or did (s)he use an Android device to go through the process? My Android phone doesn't give enough current over OTG. It mounts my kindle for about 2 seconds before they both go "nope"
It's nice that (s)he went through the effort to explain all of that, though it would have been even nicer with fewer caps :P I can't fault him/her for trying to be helpful. Quote:
I did not follow the instructions to the letter. I started from 5.8.1, downgraded and followed the guide except I did not perform a factory reset in step 2 (somehow didn't see the spoiler before I had downgraded, jailbroken, and was upgrading already), and I upgraded to 5.8.2 at the end. After everything was done and the device was upgraded, I did a weird sort of semi-factory-reset. I removed the System folder and let the device build it again, and then I removed almost all the books from my device and put a handful of books onto it because removing System folder had also removed all book covers. Everything I've tried is working fine on my PW2 at firmware version 5.8.2: - KUAL 2.7 (azw2) - MrPI - python - Gawk - EBoard Chess - KOReader 533 - KUAL+ - KUAL Helper+ - Screen Savers I wanted to try fonts hack but I read the warning on its thread and decided to wait until I set up ssh access to the device. Edit: also keeping a hopeful eye on the Mahjong thread. Last edited by Sukarn; 08-13-2016 at 08:45 AM. |

I saw that but I also read (I think on the Wiki page...which i can't find now) that the folder name trick no longer works on >5.6 because "Amazon figured us out..." or something like that. So it's confusing if that folder trick works or not. Do you have to make the folder read-only or something? It's easy enough to add so...I will but now I'm not convinced one way or the other it works.

I have installed the font hack (installed and launched fine from the KUAL booklet) but only used it to do one thing. I only tried to substitute one font for the condensed font, didn't like it, switched back to Bookerly, and left the substitute where it was. For that it appeared to work.
