Rough draft ....

Hello, All.
I've spent the last few days reading through this thread and I must say that I am VERY IMPRESSED with the writing talent of the contributing members. Your styles, word choices, etc. build such wonderful images in my mind as I read your work. I must say it is certainly wonderful and compelling eye candy. I, myself, have been writing prose, poetry and short stories since I was a junior in my high school American Literature class in 1967. We were given an assignment to write a poem on a given subject. I enjoy writing it so much that I've continued writing. I don't have any of my work with me (in work) but I'll gather together some examples and try and start posting them over time. Again, thanks to all who have taken the time to share a bit of themselves by posting their writing and allow themselves to become vulnerable to others. Regards, Last edited by Vandy; 11-11-2010 at 08:47 AM. |

Hey, All.
I thought I'd start posting some of my work. I'm not going to bother posting in chronological order -- rather, just post "as they come". I will always encourage and solicite constructive criticism of my work. Mind, I said constructive. Negative criticism doesn't do anyone any good and can actually hinder the review of a piece as well as it no use tothe author at all. My mother died in July of 2003 in Tulsa, OK USA. I was fortunate enough to fly out to see her the day she died and spend a wonderful day with her. This piece "kicked" around in my head for a couple of years before I could put it to paper. It was another year before I coud share it with folks. "Hello, Mom" by Gary W. Vanderbur © August 14, 2006 Write Naturally Publishing House ... a division of VAN Enterprises As I entered her room, a white-hot mix of emotions coursed through me. I took her hand, leaned over and kissed her. "Hello, Mom." She squeezed my hand and smiled. "Hello, Son." Sitting down, I couldn't take my eyes off her. The memories of a lifetime bubbled up unchecked. All the good, All the bad, All the happy, All the sad. We sat quietly, holding hands, our eyes speaking volumes between us. "I love you, Mom" "I love you, too, son." What a pleasant afternoon we had. The call came around nine that evening. One by one, we met in her room and took our turns saying goodbye. I took her hand, leaned over and kissed her. "Goodbye, Mom. I love you." How I yearned for her to squeeze my hand and smile. "Goodbye, son. I love you, too." This last piece is my "signature" piece -- that is, the piece that I believe defines my personality and myself the best. I use the last line as part of my e-mail signature. Postscript by Gary W. Vanderbur © May 29, 1980 Write Naturally Publishing House ... a division of VAN Enterprises I come upon you, brave and bold, And reach my mind out for you to hold. Think and wonder on what you read. Dissect and strip it, if you've the need. But in the end you will see, You is you and me is me. I hope you've enjoyed these two pieces. I'll post more as time goes on. Y'all have a great day! Since Vandy shared his, here is my goodbye to my mother poem:
Mama's Grave When everyone else had gone away I stood and watched the men -- grave-diggers, the coverer-uppers. They hung back giving space in the tree shrouded graveyard because they'd seen it before. My need to be there -- alone, the last, the oldest son's goodbye. I bent and scooped the dry clodded earth Rolling it 'round in my hand. I dropped it carefully clump by clump as the men stood silently by. I heard each thump, each sound, each tap on the silver-gray lidded box echo inside, a hollow sound, a knocking at the door. 1/19/01 - Kenny A. Chaffin (Published July 2001 Poet & Writer Contest Winner) |
