Its 64F now with alleged sun the rest of the day. But I am seeing a red-tinged dawn, which usually means rain of some kind. The rain isn't forecast to get here until this evening, but I'd not be suprised if it didnt get here sooner.

On the Sunny Coast, about 24-25C during the day for a max, with humidity only now starting to fall below 60% in the middle of the day. At night, towards morning, temperatures dropping to about 15C, now 14C, but humidity is up over 90% from about 7pm-7am. Conditions apply.

We've been a bit short of passing storms (though obviously not rain) over this last summer, and this felt a little like a summer-straggler - dark, gusty, flashy, pounding down, quick(ish), but perhaps not quite the lovely body-warmth of water-air mix that summer's have.

Cheers,
Marc

Wow! I always thought that you guys had winter when we had summer. It's getting hot here now so I figured it must be down in the teens during the day for you! Shows you just how little I know about OZ or NZ weather... Thanks for cluing me in!

You know how sometimes thunder will let off just one BIG BOOOOOM like something exploding, and then more rumbles don't follow until a few minutes later? Yeah, that, at 2am. Scared the crap outta me. I had just started drifting off to sleep when it happened. (I have sleep onset insomnia often.) I sat straight up, shaking, waiting for sirens or something, then I heard more thunder rumbles and felt a little silly.

It then settled into a normal-sounding mild storm, then rain. It's still raining.

Our (Noosa Heads/Tewantin) mid-winter average max is 21C and min is 11C. But humidity tends to drop a fair bit, making it feel colder. I must admit though, I rarely wear long pants (except for trackies in front of the telly at night).

hail is made of ice. I think it depends on humidity and how high the moisture goes to get frozen at high altitudes. Yes it is still warm enough (just).

We had lots of lightning, but not even very much rain in the end. The storm warning said Brisvegas had hail earlier.

Yep! It needs the warm air closer to ground level to cause the winds to blow the ice back up to the upper, colder regions to take on another layer of moisture, freeze, begin to fall again, get blown back up again, etc., etc., until it's too heavy to get blown up, and finally falls back down as little round balls.

Winter times, we just get sleet instead of hail.

In winter time we just get sunshine and sometimes a cold wind from the west. Some people in our region may get a frost, but we are too close to the sea. We don't have any heating in our house, if it gets too cold (<15°C), we turn off the fans and close a few windows. If really cold we put on sox and tracky daks (kitty jamies).

Sleet is something I remember from down south in my younger days. Is it like semi-frozen rain? I remember icy slush too. *shudder*

Hope this isn't too silly a question -- is Australia big enough to have vastly different climates within the continent?

Yes! There can be snow on a mountain in one place and a searing heat wave in another at the same time. Have a look at google maps and compare with Western Europe.

I was being silly though, montsnmags lives only about 45ks away from me.

I am very pleased that your solar panels are fine. My bloke make a point of asking about them, and was assured that they were hailproof.

You are on the Sunshine Coast, but let me tell you that we, on the Gold Coast, had rain which I hadn't seen nor heard for ages, and it carried on for hours.

SS, we got our quarterly bill for electricity, and it's still a quarter of what it used to be. Somehow, I can't see us starting a cottage industry selling electricity to one and all. Bugga!

Cheers
