FREE/BARGAIN - Non-Fiction - 2015

Well, by this time (about 1:00 a.m. EST) last night I had reported that there was a new round of University of Chicago Press ebook markdowns at Amazon.

I have just gone through about 22 webpages of UCP markdowns. I won't get into the reasons for this, but I honesty can't tell if new markdowns have been added since last night or not! There were some titles that were unfamiliar, but I just can't say if they were new or not. I even bought one ebook that I had not bought previously, but I don't know if it was new or if I just had overlooked it earlier.

You can help me/us. If you know that there have been new books added since last night, please post that information for your fellow Mobilereaders. Alternately, if you know that no ebooks have been added, please post that information, too. Later today, if no one has posted the information, I will pick up where I left off on the list of Amazon's UCP ebooks in order to try to answer the question.

Now, one thing that I do know is that all of the "Chicago Shorts" listed on the first couple of the webpages have been marked down from 99 cents to zero since last night.

There are new under $5Can University of Chicago Press books in the Amazon.ca store, in particular there were a number of new philosophy books. The sale items are not quite the same as at amazon.com but it's suggestive.

I finally can say that it appears that there were no markdowns last night (Tuesday night, the markdowns of which I think would be considered Wednesday's markdowns, if there had been any). I am referring only to the U.S. Amazon, I don't know about any others.

However, just before I went to make this post, I noticed that there were several UCP ebooks that had just shown up on a markdown website that I follow. It may be that today will be an eighth day of markdowns, Wednesday having been skipped for some reason. Time will tell.

I did a very thorough search of the UCP website for any mention of the book sale. For some reason, they are tight-lipped about it. So that was of no help in answering the questions that I have.

I also Googled the sale. I looked only on the first webpage of hits. I found no helpful information there. One of the hits was, in fact, a post that I had made on Mobileread about the sale. ha!

There are two different publishers of those books. Both of those books were published by educational institutions in Chicago, but neither one of the institutions was/is the University of Chicago. The second one is the University of Illinois in Chicago. Without looking this up, I feel sure that it is part of the University of Illinois system (the main campus of which is probably at Champaign/Urbana, Illinois). It is a system owned by the state of Illinois; the University of Chicago may be a state school (I don't know), but, if so, I am all but certain that it is not connected with the University of Illinois system.

The University of Chicago is a private institution, a highly prestigious one. It is especially known for its scholarship in the area of the archeology and art of the ancient Near East. And also the conservative Chicago school of economics, as personified by Milton Friedman.

Thank you again for all the effort you've put into this. I have to say my eyes have started to glaze over at that long list of increasingly familiar titles!

Yep. The "Oriental Institute" of the University of Chicago is of the main sources of information for me in my Egyptology degree .

960 about three-four days ago, 999 yesterday. 1,006 today. And no, I'm not sure which are the new ones ...

My eyes were glazing over, too. As much as I like a bargain, I'm not going to do anymore browsing. That's it. I'm through.

The problem is what I've mentioned (or at least hinted at) before--they are not clearing out any of the prior markdowns before adding new ones. That means that a person has to go through all of the old markdowns each time he/she browses the list. And that list keeps growing and growing. I am trying to be understanding because, as two or three people have mentioned, UCP rarely (if ever) has this kind of sale; my thought is that they are still learning how to do one (I hope). It looks like Amazon could have given them some advice along those lines, and maybe they did.

Thanks for setting me straight on UC being a private institution. There was something in the back of my head that said that it might be. And I definitely am aware that they are prestigious--and the creme de la creme of higher education in several fields. It's kinda like an Ivy League school in the Midwest it seems to me.

Kind of a hobby that got out of hand . I work in IT, but Egyptology is my passion, and I spend all my holidays each year in Egypt. Off there again next week, in fact!

Yes, Amazon found me all books with publisher names containing University+Chicago. I should have added Press.

It's Thursday night, just after 9 p.m., here in the U.S. Eastern time zone. I'm seeing quite a few UCP titles showing up on a markdown list that I follow. The upshot: the sale appears to be still on.

With the particular resource that I use, I can't tell exactly when ebooks have been marked down, but I get a rough idea. It looks like they were going strong around the middle of the day, before ceasing this afternoon.

If this is true, UCP's (and/or Amazon's?) modus operandi of posting markdowns during the night has changed or been modified.

I wish that I could speak more definitely and confidently than I can about all of this. I feel like I'm flying blind. Maybe what little I know will be of benefit to someone, though.

So . . . . if you haven't yet checked out the list (UCP ebooks at Amazon, sorted by price low to high), this might encourage you to scan over it, since there are even more bargains to be had than there were (assuming that UCP hasn't moved the price back up on some of them). If you have already checked out the list, you might be willing to browse the list again.

Oh, you may be wondering why, if I have access to a markdown list, do I not just browse it for the UCP markdowns. There's one main reason. That is that this markdown list does not give nearly all of the ebook markdowns that there are. It gives what the website operators consider the "best." Their opinion and my opinion of what are the best are not the same. The number of UCP ebooks on this list has been relatively small compared to all of the things that I knew or found out later had been marked down by UCP.
