A sony reader/Calibre question

First, I love this new version! Spent too much time exploring it today, and I'm not done

One question though: I have a sony reader (the 600) and while it works just fine with Calibre, even better now, I wanted to know if there was a way to change the collection once the books are on the device.
For the read/unread, I use tags, which makes for useful collections, but when I change the tags in Calibre, the collection on the sony doesn't change. Is there a way to do it (apart from the destroy-the-wall-to-kill-the-fly erasing of my card and reloading of my entire library?).

Thanks, and thanks again for a wonderful job!

At the moment, no. Calibre builds collections using the book's metadata when it is sent to the device. It does not attempt to update that information later. This process is not likely to change anytime soon for several reasons including performance, but we will keep the idea in mind should the opportunity arise.

You can re-download individual books at your convenience, which will bring the new metadata with them and add/remove them from collections. This incremental approach should be better than nuking the card.

Thanks! And the one by one approach does make more sense (except that I tend to forget what I changed where and when -- and I keep hoping soft- and hardware will do all the work for me... ahm... well, I'll keep trying to use that brain thingie then )

Loved the program the first time I tried it and love it even more now. Version 0.7.0 makes it even more fab & groovy!

Just wanted to say that I like the new position of the cover browser in 0.7.1. On a 22 inch monitor this Software package is looking mighty spiffy.

I misspoke myself in my last post. Starting with the next release (0.7.2), the first time that calibre detects that a book on the device is the same as a book in the library, calibre sends new metadata to the device. At that point, the collections for the book will be changed. Second and later attempts don't do this (for performance reasons).

If calibre does not detect that the books are the same or the 'second' caveat applies, then what I said before remains true. You will need to re-add the book. Although I don't see a firm reason for doing so, it is probably best to delete the existing copy before sending the new one.

Thanks for the effort to make Calibre even greater, Kovid. And of course all the other developers too!

FYI, If you often update Calibre, you may want to consider installing the development environment and running from source. The update process uses the Bazaar version control system, which just gets the files that have changed and it installs only those modified files. An update on Windows might typically take me 60 - 90 seconds. The normal Windows .msi binary package install has to download the entire Calibre package, even if only minor changes were made to a few files, and then you have to wait for Windows to double check all the unchanged files. Plus, with source, you get faster access to improvements and bug fixes (yes, I know that K's typical 6-7 day release schedule is already ultrafast!).

I have a single batch file that runs the update, and I just click it when I see there's a new version, or when a fix has been announced that I need.

60-90 seconds isn't much faster than it's taking me now. Other programs I've installed were really involved, required baby sitting them, took forever, etc. I'm satisfied with the way calibre installs now. It works.

I've seen several complaints about the slow speed of upgrading on Windows. I don't do binary upgrades very often, and when I do, I usually just start it and leave, so I haven't seen the speed. Do people really object to upgrades that take less than a 2 minutes? I though I was avoiding some big problem by running from source. Looks like the "big problem" was more of a tiny little mouse!

No "big problems" here installing new versions on Windows. No problems at all, actually.

Calibre finally loads as you would expect on a modern PC : fast... I was starting to despair from Python on this one (was it the culprit ? Probably not since I do not know that I updated anything on that front). Yet, Calibre 0.7.1 (yet another latest release :-)) really starts instantaneously on my PC (Vista 64 on an SSD), which was not the case before.

Ah, I see some "performance improvement"on the changelog of 0.7.0, congratulations Kovid ! I'm not about to regret my donation, really !

Just want to add my thanks to the crowd for this new version of Calibre.

I particularly enjoy the check mark that shows in Calibre when the book is on the device - or vice versa. As I tend to delete books from my device after I'm done reading them, this makes it easy to keep Calibre and my ereader matching.

Extra, extra thanks to Kovid & the gang for this (actually, for Calibre in general). Awesome product!
