I just thought this would add perspective to the OP.

It doesn't appear that this was force by secret collusion with the environmental goons. Just BP going for the largest pool of oil they could find.

I was reporting something I got DIRECTLY from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. not my view, I'm not an apologist for BP. I am, however, very interested in ALL sides of any situation being heard

It's me. I was really reacting to a guy I know who works on these rigs and was always telling me how great the rigs are for the fish. He's from Texas.

Here in Florida we (both Dems and Reps) are always sensitive anything that affects the attraction of our beaches and waterfront. Most of our economy is in one way or another affected by it.

I tried some googling around for exact rules when you originally posted this but couldn't come up with anything clear, but regulations for what distance wells must be from shore doesn't look to be some big secret or some big recent conspiracy. For instance, I saw a link mention regulations keeping drilling over 100 miles off Florida's shore (with the Gulf spill a little more than 40 miles from land right now.) It is public information-- news probably hasn't been reporting on it because they think it is a non-issue.

unfortunately I didn't make my first post as clear as I could have... it was a combination of depth and distance. there had been a selected site both closer and more shallow, but they were forced away from it. once again... this is just what I was told

certainly an oil company would prefer to drill in "relatively" shallow water (if not on land). depth adds too many problems to an already hazardous environment.

Sheesh : The Last Refuge ! If a spill occurs here it'll be at least as catastrophic, not least cos burning fuel could help thaw permafrost and its storage of gases released. And the environment is not the cosy warmth of the Gulf. Trade in deep water and hurricanes for snow snow ice snow and blizzards where metals struggle, never mind personnel.....

One can't help wondering why, if this is such an environmentally sensitive area, permits for deep-water drilling were granted. I'm not defending BP, but accidents can happen to even the best-run companies, and it's well-known that techniques for capping wells in water of this depth are simply not well-established.
