It eludes me why people are so hung up on something like Flash and looking for conspiracy theories about Apple lying or covering up.

Obviously for a Flash addict, the iPhone/iPad/Touch is not the device for you but the nice thing is I'm sure that there will be other options for you as other companies try to catch up with Apple.

I the iPad is successful like the iPod touch and maybe like the iPhone html5 will get a boost and flash will be depreciated.

If the iPad and other devices that do not use flash are not successful in the marketplace then flash will be added to the devices to gain market share.

Yes, but you have to admit that Flash is a pox on the web. FireFox is moving to do what Chrome does and host Flash in it's own process, so when (not if) it crashes it won't bring down the whole browser.

I just want to be able to watch the video clips on the BBC News web site. Perhaps complex uses of Flash do crash, but simple video streaming certainly doesn't seem to.

Well, we hope that these news sites will start offering videos using HTML5. That is supported by FireFox and Safari and I think Chrome.

I'm sure if the stats of iPad users are high enough these sites will all have to think very hard about using HTML5 for video streaming.

From what I've been hearing from other UK folks is that BBC is already moving a lot of their video to H264.

The current situation, for me like Harry, is that some key websites that I use a lot will be missing content on the iPad's initial release: the BBC and other news sites will lack video, and my paid subscription to TennisTV won't work.

It is simply rubbish to claim that the iPad offers "the best way to experience the web". Really? With the bits I paid for missing?

Yes, we can hope that either flash support is added in the future or that all those web sites embrace the fledgling HTML 5. But waiting for that is a bit beside the point when competing tablets that do support flash are likely to be available a lot sooner.

I think that's for the iPlayer TV programme distribution rather than the news clips in the website.

I'm going to buck the trend here and actually comment on this guy's article instead of rehashing all the pontification about the iPad.

I'm not entirely convinced by his 'Formless vs Definite' dialectic. Even a Danielle Steel novel has a degree of form - chapters, text breaks, paragraphs are all primarily visual, rather than textual markers whose form can vary significantly depending on the canvas used. Likewise, 'Definite Content' represents a pretty broad spectrum from the stylised books on design that he shows to a scientific article in which the juxtaposition of image and body text is haphazard.

He's also being more than presumptuous in claiming that the iPad represents any real novelty in this arena. The second part of his article makes me wonder if he's been asleep the past 20 years and missed the big change to scrolled text that's called the world wide web. The fact is that despite our deep familiarity with scroll-bars, we still find comfort in the page as a presentational device.

Apart from these two ideas and a final paean to the idea of nicely-bound books there's not much else in the article. In fact, I have the niggling feeling that he spent more time choosing the fonts and laying out the pictures than deciding what to say.

You mean, of course, that it doesn't do what you, personally, would like it to do.

You might as well say that your car doesn't work because you can't drive to Hawaii in it.

I guess I don't see the plain sight conspiracy you do.

I also have yet to find any reader device that meets my needs fully at this time and the iPad appears to be able to meet what I want to do. I'll find out when I visit the Apple store after it comes out.

Though the mass market's knowledge of the iPad's limitations relative to Apple's claims about the "best" browsing experience is not really comparable to a car that can't drive to Hawaii.

More like a car that can't drive in rain. Defenders will say that it's dangerous and pointless to drive in conditions like that anyway, and if the car is popular enough, it will encourage more underground tunnel building.

Apple always liked me best.
