you're not the only one. i've had no news at all, and although i called and left a message on wednesday (? i think it was wednesday) he never called me back. i meant to call today, but a friend of mine came over and it completely slipped my mind until it was too late. now i guess i'll have to wait until next tuesday, oh the anguish ! i'm really tempted to go to the sonystore in person on tuesday and claim i "just happened to be in the neighborhood" (pff. like i'm ever randomly in *that* neighborhood, it's all the way on the other side of the city).

Well I would, and I would randomly bring a bat and say you just happened by randomly on ur way home from a baseball game. Then politely inquire about ur reader with a smile that says "if you have nothing good to say I will crush you with my gaze and will alone so I don't know why I brought this bat", cuz that's what I'd do

the saga continues !

a few days ago i was in crisis mode because i had no news and i had called a few times and never been called back (and it's been more than a month !).

finally i heard from the guy 2 days ago, he said the head of consumer service had decided to exchange my reader for a new one, finally, but now, there was a delay because they had to decide if the new one would come from sonystore stock or from consumer service stock. it's like a farce. the guy even gave me the direct telephone number and the name of the head of consumer service so i could, ah, "encourage" him to make up his damned mind. i wanted to call yesterday but i had a crazy day and didn't have time. so i would have called today, but...

just now, i got a call from the guy from sony. "we had a big surprise today," he says. "your reader has been returned, repaired. i guess they recieved the missing card sooner than they expected." he says he plugged it in and tested it, and everything is working fine. crazy ! so i'm off to pick it up (FINALLY !!) shortly. i'm a bit disappointed not to have a new one (just to be sure) but he said the card they replaced should fix all the problems i was having, and at this point i am just glad to get it back !!!

good news, eh ?

yes, and it's ABOUT FARKING TIME !!! it's good this happened today, if i had to wait until monday i probably would have gone crazy. but, yay !

yes ! i am FINALLY reunited with my 600, after more than one month !! and so far everything seems to be okay. the guy plugged it into the usb port to show me, and it connected fine, and when i came home and plugged it in here it connected right away as well. i guess we just have to see how things go but i'm feeling optimistic. there is an odd ghosting effect which i didn't have before, and which is most noticeable when i turn it off on the home screen (with that big black zone at the bottom), but it seems to disappear at the second screen refresh and it's not that big a problem, so i'm just going to ignore it, because i couldn't stand to be separated AGAIN so soon.

the repair service loaded me up with all the sample books again so i can check if there's anything good in there i didn't get last time. (i doubt it.)

thanks everyone for the moral support ! i would have been lost without you.

ha ! haha !! it is to laugh !!! i wish. actually i was tempted to ask for a 1 month extension for my guarantee, because honestly, i was getting quite cranky last week (over a month, i mean seriously) but i didn't dare yell too loud for fear they remind me "you know, we *could* just suggest you get in touch with B&H video in new york, after all..." so i didn't want to push my luck.

I, too, bought my PRS-600 from B&HVideo (on-line: impressive outfit!!) - necessary because Sony Australia has never done eBooks and doesn't plan to (so I'm told by the support desk here). I bought a Valentine's Day bundle: red reader + a beaut red cover with a light + a voucher code for a FREE eBook from the Sony shop. "The Heart Speaks". Sounds like...Valentine's Day Mush? Errm...it's written by a cardiologist.

Seems we got the same sample eBooks, though. I *can* read German and French but, well, those titles don't inspire, exactly! I read the whole 44 pages of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" sampler, though. It's been decades since I read that book originally and I *am* tempted to go back to it, via eBook.

Getting to the point of my posting a reply, I tracked through this thread because its original theme seemed related to dysfunction in the USB interface. I, too, experienced some oddities which were threatening to drive me [more] bonkers. But it was not *loss* of the USB connection, it was total hangup of the Reader Library software when trying to "disconnect" using the software button, or on starting a Synch, that would leave the device still connected but not visible to the system (WinXP SP3) as a connected device. Ugly.

Then I discovered Calibre. Disabling the Sony library software launcher in the Registry and using Calibre to maintain the library has solved that problem altogether. It has an ePub validator, too, that might be useful for some of the things I'm into. It does look as though the USB problem (or that one, at least) is firmware/software related. Unfortunately, Check for Updates indicates I do have the latest version of both, so it will be interesting to see what transpires when the promised updates come along.
